Read the excerpt from “George Washington.”
Washington longed to retire to his fields at Mount Vernon. But he soon realized that the Nation under its Articles of Confederation was not functioning well, so he became a prime mover in the steps leading to the Constitutional Convention at Philadelphia in 1787. When the new Constitution was ratified, the Electoral College unanimously elected Washington President.
Which provides the best objective summary of this excerpt?
Even though he was unanimously elected to be president, Washington wished he could retire to Mount Vernon instead.
The Constitution probably would not have been ratified if Washington had retired early at Mount Vernon instead of attending the Constitutional Convention.
Washington played a major role in the events that led to the ratification of the Constitution and was elected to be the country’s first president.
Even though he wished to retire, George Washington knew that the nation needed help, so he put a lot of effort into helping to develop the Constitution. Eventually, the Constitutional Convention took place in Philadelphia in 1787, and the Constitution was approved. Then, Washington was elected president of the country. The entire Electoral College voted for him.

Writing: Persuasive Essay: Our Changing Society
Our Changing Society
Society is constantly developing and changing, and people disagree about the progress of this development. Do you believe that the world has changed for the better, or for the worse?
In a multi-paragraph essay, support your answer to this question. Reinforce your position with specific details and examples from readings and your own experience.
As you write, remember your essay will be scored based on how well you:
develop a multi-paragraph response to the assigned topic that clearly communicates your thesis to the audience.
support your thesis with meaningful reasons and sufficient details.
address the readers' concerns, opposing viewpoint, or counterarguments.
organize your essay in a clear and logical manner, including an introduction, body, and conclusion.
use well-structured sentences and language that are appropriate for your audience.
edit your work to conform to the conventions of standard American English.
Answer:
Society is constantly evolving, but not everyone agrees on whether these changes are for the better or worse. In my view, there have been both positive and negative changes in our society over time. In this essay, I will outline some of the changes I believe have been positive and negative, and explain why I think they have had the impact they have.
One of the most significant positive changes in our society has been the increased emphasis on equality and social justice. In the past, many groups of people, including women, people of color, and LGBTQ+ individuals, faced significant discrimination and barriers to full participation in society. Over time, however, movements for equality and social justice have brought about significant changes, including expanded civil rights protections, greater representation in political and cultural institutions, and increased visibility for marginalized groups. These changes have made society more inclusive and welcoming for all, and have helped to reduce inequality and discrimination.
Another positive change in our society has been the rapid development of technology and scientific knowledge. Advances in medicine, transportation, and communication have improved the quality of life for people around the world. We can now connect with people across the globe instantaneously, travel faster and more efficiently, and access medical treatments that were once unimaginable. These changes have helped to bring people together, expand our knowledge and understanding of the world, and improve our health and well-being.
However, not all changes in society have been positive. One negative change has been the rise of income inequality and economic insecurity for many people. While the wealthiest individuals and corporations have seen tremendous growth in their wealth, many working-class people have seen stagnant wages and decreased job security. This has led to a growing sense of frustration and discontent among those who feel left behind by the current economic system. Additionally, climate change and environmental degradation threaten the health and well-being of people around the world, and our political and social institutions have been slow to respond.
In conclusion, our society has undergone many changes over time, both positive and negative. While I believe that progress has been made in many areas, there is still much work to be done to address the challenges we face. By continuing to work for equality and justice, advancing scientific knowledge, and promoting economic stability and environmental sustainability, we can create a society that benefits everyone. It is up to all of us to work together to shape the future we want to see.

Read the selection called "The Preservation and Repair of Historic Log Buildings." Then summarize the selection by putting the main idea of each numbered paragraph into your own words.
Answer:provide basic guidance regarding their preservation and maintenance. A log building is defined as a building whose structuralwalls are composed of horizontally laid or vertically positioned logs. While this Brief will focus upon horizontally-laid, corner-notched log construction, and, in particular, houses as a building type, the basic approach to preservation presented here, as well as many of the physical treatments, can be applied to virtually any kind of log structure.2Log buildings, because of their distinct material, physical structure, and sometimes their architectural design, can develop their own unique deteriorationproblems. The information presented here is intended to convey the range of appropriate preservation techniques available. It does not, however, detail how to perform these treatments; this work should be left to professionalsexperienced in the preservation of historic log buildings.3Despite the publication since the 1930s of a number of books and articles on the history of log construction in America, some misconceptions persist about log buildings. Log cabins were not the first type of shelter built by all American colonists. The term "log cabin" today is often loosely applied to any type of log house, regardless of its form and the historic context of its setting. "Log cabin" or "log house" often conjures up associations with colonial American history and rough frontier life. While unaltered colonial era buildings in general are rare, historic log buildings as a group are neither as old nor as rare as generally believed. One and two-story log houses were built in towns and settlements across the country until about the middle of the 19th century, and in many areas, particularly in the West, as well as the Midwest and southern mountain regions, log continued to be a basic building material despite the introduction of wooden balloon frame construction. By the early 20th century, the popularity of "rustic" architecture had revived log construction throughout the country, and in many areas where it had not been used for decades.4A distinction should be drawn between the traditional meanings of "log cabin" and "log house." "Log cabin" generally denotes a simple one, or one-and-one-half story structure, somewhat impermanent, and less finished or less architecturally sophisticated. A "log cabin" was usually constructed with round rather than hewn, or hand-worked, logs, and it was the first generation homestead erected quickly for frontier shelter. "Log house" historically denotes a more permanent, hewn-log dwelling, either one or two stories, of more complex design, often built as a second generation replacement. Many of the earliest 18th and early 19th century log houseswere traditionally clad, sooner or later, with wood siding or stucco.

why did esperanza change and what made her change (the house on the mango street)
Answer:
throughout The House on Mango Street, particularly in “No Speak English,” those who are not able to communicate effectively (or at all) are relegated to the bottom levels of society. Mamacita moves to the country to be with her husband, and she becomes a prisoner of her apartment because she does not speak English. She misses home and listens to the Spanish radio station, and she is distraught when her baby begins learning English words. His new language excludes her. Similarly, Esperanza’s father could not even choose what he ate when he first moved to the country, because he did not know the words for any of the foods but ham and eggs. Esperanza’s mother may be a native English speaker, but her letter to the nuns at Esperanza’s school is unconvincing to them in part because it is poorly written.
Esperanza observes the people around her and realizes that if not knowing or not mastering the language creates powerlessness, then having the ability to manipulate language will give her power. She wants to change her name so that she can have power over her own destiny. Her Aunt Lupe tells her to keep writing because it will keep her free, and Esperanza eventually understands what her aunt means. Writing keeps Esperanza spiritually free, because putting her experiences into words gives her power over them. If she can use beautiful language to write about a terrible experience, then the experience seems less awful. Esperanza’s spiritual freedom may eventually give her the power to be literally free as well.

The Struggle for Self-Definition
The struggle for self-definition is a common theme in a coming-of-age novel, or bildungsroman, and in The House on Mango Street, Esperanza’s struggle to define herself underscores her every action and encounter. Esperanza must define herself both as a woman and as an artist, and her perception of her identity changes over the course of the novel. In the beginning of the novel Esperanza wants to change her name so that she can define herself on her own terms, instead of accepting a name that expresses her family heritage. She wants to separate herself from her parents and her younger sister in order to create her own life, and changing her name seems to her an important step in that direction. Later, after she becomes more sexually aware, Esperanza would like to be “beautiful and cruel” so men will like her but not hurt her, and she pursues that goal by becoming friends with Sally. After she is assaulted, she doesn’t want to define herself as “beautiful and cruel” anymore, and she is, once again, unsure of who she is.
Eventually, Esperanza decides she does not need to set herself apart from the others in her neighborhood or her family heritage by changing her name, and she stops forcing herself to develop sexually, which she isn’t fully ready for. She accepts her place in her community and decides that the most important way she can define herself is as a writer. As a writer, she observes and interacts with the world in a way that sets her apart from non-writers, giving her the legitimate new identity she’s been searching for. Writing promises to help her leave Mango Street emotionally, and possibly physically as well.
Sexuality vs. Autonomy
In The House on Mango Street, Esperanza’s goals are clear: she wants to escape her neighborhood and live in a house of her own. These ambitions are always in her mind, but as she begins to mature, the desire for men appears in her thoughts as well. At first, the desire to escape and the desire for men don’t seem mutually exclusive, but as Esperanza observes other women in the neighborhood and the marriages that bind them, she begins to doubt that she can pursue both. Most of the women Esperanza meets are either trapped in marriages that keep them on Mango Street or tied down by their children. Esperanza decides she does not want to be like these women, but her dire observations of married life do not erase her sexual yearnings for neighborhood boys.

I shall return again; I shall return
To laugh and love and watch with wonder-eyes
At golden noon the forest fires burn,
Wafting their blue-black smoke to sapphire skies.
I shall return to loiter by the streams
That bathe the brown blades of the bending grasses,
And realize once more my thousand dreams
Of waters rushing down the mountain passes.
I shall return to hear the fiddle and fife
Of village dances, dear delicious tunes
That stir the hidden depths of native life,
Stray melodies of dim remembered runes.
