What are three key differences between “Dreams” and “Harlem” by Langston Hughes?

Answer 2

Answer:

the “dream” is a goal in life, not just dreams experienced during sleep. The dream is important to the people’s life. You should have a dream so that life has a worth of living. Even with two different themes, these two poems deal with and send the same message on dreams.

Explanation:

“A dream Deferred” originally was named “Harlem” where Langston Hughes was from. This poem Hughes uses poetic devices such as simile and personification to give an image to readers. It suggests that people shouldn’t delay their dream because the more they postpone them, the more the dreams will change and less likely they will come true. From the poem, it says “What happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun?” Raisin is an image of grapes dried up. Everyone knows it was a grape, but after it was put under the sun, it dried and was changed. This shows how when dream is delayed it wouldn’t be the same as original. However, “Dreams” this poem expresses the idea that one can’t give up on dreams and without dreams life is a waste. For example “Hold fast to dreams, for if dream die, life is a broken-winged bird that cannot fly.” Also at the very end, Langston Hughes wrote that“For when dreams go, Life is a barren field, Frozen with snow.” A barren field is a field with nothing; if you don’t have dreams then life would be nothing because nothing grows on a barren field. This is the differences between the two poems. You can see the two are different, but are closely related. The central theme of “A Dream deferred” and “Dreams” is dream just like the title. Both of these poems use description and symbolism.  It uses lines to describe life, for example from "A Dream Deferred" written "or fester like a sore, and then run?" If you have a sore, you want it to dry up so it will heal, but if it festers and runs, that means it is infected and will take longer to heal. It is like a dream that is getting farther and farther. An example from "Dreams," is "Life is a broken-winged bird." This describes how without dream, life is a waste. These lines show the description use with life. Both of these poems express life to show readers not to let go of dream because if you have a life then you must have a dream. Just like the poem, without a dream life is a waste. Even if you have a dream, hold on to it and not let go because you don’t know what would happen if it was postpone.

What was Dr.King’s perspective about segregation

Answers

Answer:

Although slavery in the United States ended in the late 19th century, institutionalized racism continued to oppress African Americans even decades later. By the mid-20th century, blacks were still forced to use separate public utilities and schools from the superior ones reserved for whites; they suffered routine discrimination in employment and housing, as well as abuse and lynching from some whites, and they were unable to fully exercise their right to vote.

For decades, civil rights activists had been fighting these laws and social customs to secure equality for all Americans. These activists had won some significant victories; among the most notable was the 1954 Supreme Court decision Brown v. Board of Education, which held that state laws requiring black students and white students to attend different schools were unconstitutional.[1] However, these victories could not dismantle the systemic racism that plagued the country. It was in this environment, seeing the possibility of an America where black and white citizens were truly equal, that Martin Luther King, Jr. joined in the fight for civil rights for black Americans.

The more we reflect upon this question, the harder it is to
answer. It involves a study of the human heart which
leads us through devious mazes of passion, out of which
it is difficult to find our way. Think of it, fair reader, not
as if the decision of the question depended upon yourself,
but upon that hot-blooded, semi-barbaric princess, her
soul at a white heat beneath the combined fires of despair
and jealousy. She had lost him, but who should have
him?
-"The Lady, or the Tiger?"

What is the main question the author is building
through suspense?
O Will the citizens demand that the princess's lover be
allowed to live?
O Will the king let the princess marry her lover, or
make him marry a courtier?
O Will the princess choose to let her lover live, or send
him to his death?
Will the tiger kill the princess, or will it kill her lover?

"If it swallowed me whole" idiom

"Maybe a cup of self control" idiom or metaphor

"I can make you feel alive" might be considered a hyperbole but it could be personification since the voice of the coffee is talking technically. Also, I guess all of the chorus could be considered personification...

"But it feels better to check than to reflect" might be a metaphor

1. During periods of warm weather, many people wished they owned a motorcycle. Of course, it is precisely at such times that most motorcycle owners do want to sell. Therefore it makes more sense to buy a motorcycle during the winter. The prices of used motorcycles are lower then, and there are more vehicles for sale. In addition it is most sensible to to shop by searching through the classified ads, and last winter I found a part-time job there, too.

2. The United States is a nation of watchers. Of the sixty-million homes in the United States, ninety-five percent have television sets. The average television set is turned on five and three-quarters hours per day. An American child can expect to view enough television to total 3000 days, or nine years of his or her life. On a winter evening, half of all Americans are at home in front of their television sets. Television watching seems to be a national addiction.

The man sitting across from her told her that he was thinking of taking the job in Wichita. "I am going to take the job at Wichita." She looked at him. "But why?", she asked. That was 2,000 miles away. "Why are you accepting the job? Isn't there a good enough job here?" She asked. "This job gives me more money than any job around here, and my bills are very high; I need this job to keep a roof over me and my family's head, food and water, and electricity." Said her friend. She sighed and got teary-eyed. "But I don't want you to go!", She said. "I'm sorry, but I have to....." His voice trailed off. She got up and gave him a hug. 30 minutes later, they said they're goodbyes. Then he was gone. Everyday the woman was not happy; until 3 months later he finally started calling. She was normal after that, but she was not completely whole without him. That's how it was for a long, long time.

Answer:

the overconfidence of the British troops

Explanation:

In this excerpt from "The Star-Spangled Banner," Francis Scott Key uses the word "vauntingly" to describe the overconfidence of the British troops.

He questions the whereabouts of the band (referring to the British forces) who boasted with excessive pride about the devastation of war and the chaos of the battle. Key suggests that their vaunted declarations about how the war would forever deprive Americans of their homes and country have proven hollow.

The word "vauntingly" implies a sense of arrogance and boastfulness, highlighting the overconfident attitude of the British troops that Key critiques in this patriotic poem.
