PLEASE HELP MEEE
“All Together Now””

by Barbara Jordan

Persuasive speech given while addressing the Democratic Convention in 1992

When I look at race relations today I can see that some positive changes have come about. But much remains to be done, and the answer does not lie in more legislation. We have the legislation we need: we have the laws. Frankly, I don’t believe that the task of bringing us together can be accomplished by government. What we need now is soul force—the efforts of people working on a small scale to build a truly tolerant, harmonious society. And parents can do a great deal to create that tolerant society.

We all know that race relations in America have had a very rocky history. Think about the 1960s when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was in his heyday and there were marches and protests against segregation and discrimination. The movement culminated in 1963 with the March on Washington.

Following that event, race relations reached an all-time peak. President Lyndon B. Johnson pushed through the Civil rights Act of 1964, which remains the fundamental piece of civil rights legislation this century. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 ensured that everyone in our country could vote. At last, black people and white people seemed ready to live together in peace.

But that is not what happened. By the 1990’s the good feeling had diminished. Today the nation seems to be suffering from compassion fatigue, and issues such as race relations and civil rights have never regained momentum.

These issues, however, remain crucial. As our society becomes more diverse, people of all races and backgrounds will have to learn to live together. If we don’t think this is important, all we have to do is look at the situation in Bosnia today.

How do we create a harmonious society out of so many kinds of people? The key is tolerance—the one value that is indispensable in creating community.

If we are concerned about community, if it is important to us that people not feel excluded, then we have to do something. Each of us can decide to have one friend of a different race or background in our mix of friends. If we do this, we’ll be working together to push things forward.

One thing is clear to me: We, as human beings, must be willing to accept people who are different from ourselves. I must be willing to accept people who don’t look as I do and talk as I do. It is crucial that I am open to their feelings, their inner reality.

What can parents do? We can put our faith in young people as a positive force. I have yet to find a racist baby. Babies come into the world as blank slates and, with their beautiful innocence, see others not as different but as enjoyable companions. Children learn ideas and attitudes from the adults who nurture them. I absolutely believe that children do not adopt prejudices unless they absorb them from their parents or teachers.

The best way to get this country faithful to the American dream of tolerance and equality is to start small. Parents can actively encourage their children to be in the company of people who are of other racial and ethnic backgrounds. If a child thinks, “Well, that person’s color is not the same as mine, but she must be okay because she likes to play with the same things I like to play with,” that child will grow up with a broader view of humanity.

I’m an incurable optimist. For the rest of the time that I have left on this planet I want to bring people together. You might think of this as a labor of love. Now, I know that love means different things to different people. But what I mean is this: I care about you because you are a fellow human being and I find it okay in my mind, in my heart, to simply say to you, I love you.

And maybe that would encourage you to love me in return.

It is possible for all of us to work on this—at home, in our schools, at our jobs. It is possible to work on human relationships in every area of our lives.

In this story, you should have at least five stopping places on its journey from “flush” to “faucet”. For example, you could use the following path: the drop of water enters the drain of the shower, and then it travels to the wastewater treatment plant, it then is released into a stream, which flows into a river, and from here the drop is collected and cleaned and is sent to the faucet in the bathroom of a movie theater.
As you describe the path, explain what is happening at each location and what the drop is experiencing. Remember that this is a children’s book and you want to make it appropriate for this audience.

Answers

Answer:

Once upon a time, there was a little drop of water named Drip. Drip lived in a cozy bathtub in a house with a family who loved to take long showers. One day, Drip decided to go on an adventure and explore where it would end up if it went down the drain.

Drip first landed in the drain of the shower, joining other drops of water. It was a bit scared at first, but soon realized it was not alone. Drip and the other drops traveled through pipes and tunnels until they reached the wastewater treatment plant.

At the treatment plant, Drip and the other drops were separated from dirt and other particles. The treatment plant used special filters and chemicals to clean the water, making sure it was safe to be released into the environment. Drip felt refreshed and happy to be cleaned up and ready for its next adventure.

After the water was cleaned, it was released into a nearby stream. Drip joined the other drops of water as they flowed through the stream, past rocks and plants. The water felt cool and fresh, and Drip felt like it was on a fun water slide.

The stream eventually led to a river, where the water became wider and deeper. Drip saw fish swimming by and ducks floating on the surface. The river was surrounded by trees and hills, and Drip felt like it was in a beautiful forest.

The final stop on Drip's adventure was at a water treatment plant, where the water was once again filtered and cleaned. This time, it was cleaned specifically for drinking. Drip was excited to be part of this process and felt honored to be able to provide clean drinking water to people.

After being cleaned and treated, Drip was sent through pipes to a nearby movie theater. Drip traveled through the pipes until it reached the bathroom faucet. Finally, Drip was able to complete its adventure and fulfill its purpose by providing clean water for people to drink and use.

We use superlatives and comparatives to say how people or objects are different. We use a comparative adjective to show how two people or objects are different from each other and a superlative adjective to show how one person is.

Superlatives are usually created by adding the suffix -est to the end of the adjective and using it before (eg the fastest) or adding most before the adjective (eg the tastiest, the most expensive). Cheetah is the fastest land animal.

I just won't go in a plane, any kind of plane.

I guess I was younger then and more daring when I was younger. Sometimes, I would hang out of the helicopter to shoot pictures with no fear at all. Now, just thinking about flying makes my heart race. It's not that I'm afraid the plane will crash. That's the funny thing. Not ha-ha funny, but peculiar, you know. I just start trembling when I think of them closing that door, trapping us inside. I can't tell you why.

How do birth control and family planning correlate with each other? how does the definition of the common good differ in limited and unlimited governments World Population Problems THE GROWTH OF WORLD POPULATION The population of the world, now somewhat in excess of three billion persons, is growing at about two per cent a year, or faster than at any other period in man's history. While there has been a steady increase of population growth during the past two or three centuries, it has been especially rapid during the past 20 years. To appreciate the pace of population growth we should recall that world population doubled in about 1,700 years from the time of Christ until the middle of the 17th century; it doubled again in about 200 years, doubled again in less than 100, and, if the current rate of population increase were to remain constant, would double every 35 years. Moreover, this rate is still increasing To be sure, the rate of increase cannot continue to grow much further. Even if the death rate were to fall to zero, at the present level of human reproduction the growth rate would not be much in excess of three and one-half per cent per year, and the time required for world population to double would not fall much below 20 years Although the current two per cent a year does not sound like an extraordinary rate of increase, a few simple calculations demonstrate that such a rate of increase in human population could not possibly continue for more than a few hundred years. Had this rate existed from the time of Christ to now, the world population would have increased in this period by a factor of about 7*10, in other words, there would be about 20 million individuals in place of each person now alive, or 100 people to each square foot. If the present world population should continue to increase at its present rate of two per cent per year, then, within two centuries, there will be more than 150 billion people. Calculations of this sont demonstrate without question not only that the current continued increase in the rate of population growth must cease but also that this rate must decline again. There can be no doubt concerning this long-term prognosis: Either the birth rate of the world must come down or the death rate must go back up. POPULATION GROWTH IN DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE WORLD The rates of population growth are not the same, of course, in all parts of the world. Among the industrialized countries, Japan and most of the countries of Europe are now growing relatively slowly-doubling their populations in 50 to 100 years. Another group of industrialized countries--the United States, the Soviet Union, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and Argentina -are doubling their populations in 30 to 40 years, approximately the world average. The pre-industrial, low-income, and less- developed areas of the world, with two thirds of the world's population-including Asia (except Japan and the Asiatic part of the Soviet Union), the southwestern Pacific islands (principally the Philippines and Indonesia), Africa (with the exception of European minorities), the Caribbean Islands, and Latin AmericaSummarize the articleWrite three arguments to criticize the articleWrite a conclusion Which is a true statement about medition?
