World Population Problems THE GROWTH OF WORLD POPULATION The population of the world, now somewhat in excess of three billion persons, is growing at about two per cent a year, or faster than at any other period in man's history. While there has been a steady increase of population growth during the past two or three centuries, it has been especially rapid during the past 20 years. To appreciate the pace of population growth we should recall that world population doubled in about 1,700 years from the time of Christ until the middle of the 17th century; it doubled again in about 200 years, doubled again in less than 100, and, if the current rate of population increase were to remain constant, would double every 35 years. Moreover, this rate is still increasing To be sure, the rate of increase cannot continue to grow much further. Even if the death rate were to fall to zero, at the present level of human reproduction the growth rate would not be much in excess of three and one-half per cent per year, and the time required for world population to double would not fall much below 20 years Although the current two per cent a year does not sound like an extraordinary rate of increase, a few simple calculations demonstrate that such a rate of increase in human population could not possibly continue for more than a few hundred years. Had this rate existed from the time of Christ to now, the world population would have increased in this period by a factor of about 7*10, in other words, there would be about 20 million individuals in place of each person now alive, or 100 people to each square foot. If the present world population should continue to increase at its present rate of two per cent per year, then, within two centuries, there will be more than 150 billion people. Calculations of this sont demonstrate without question not only that the current continued increase in the rate of population growth must cease but also that this rate must decline again. There can be no doubt concerning this long-term prognosis: Either the birth rate of the world must come down or the death rate must go back up. POPULATION GROWTH IN DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE WORLD The rates of population growth are not the same, of course, in all parts of the world. Among the industrialized countries, Japan and most of the countries of Europe are now growing relatively slowly-doubling their populations in 50 to 100 years. Another group of industrialized countries--the United States, the Soviet Union, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and Argentina -are doubling their populations in 30 to 40 years, approximately the world average. The pre-industrial, low-income, and less- developed areas of the world, with two thirds of the world's population-including Asia (except Japan and the Asiatic part of the Soviet Union), the southwestern Pacific islands (principally the Philippines and Indonesia), Africa (with the exception of European minorities), the Caribbean Islands, and Latin America•Summarize the article•Write three arguments to criticize the article•Write a conclusion

Answers

Answer 1

The article discusses the rapid growth of the world's population and the problems that come with it. The population is currently growing at a rate of two percent per year, which is faster than at any other period in human history.

The article also discusses the different rates of population growth in different parts of the world, with industrialized countries growing more slowly than pre-industrial, low-income, and less-developed areas. This growth rate cannot continue for more than a few hundred years, as it would result in an unsustainable number of people on the planet.
Criticism:
1. The article does not address the potential solutions to the problem of overpopulation, such as promoting family planning and birth control methods, or implementing policies to encourage smaller family sizes.
2. The article assumes that the current rate of population growth will continue indefinitely, without taking into account potential changes in fertility rates or mortality rates due to advances in medicine, technology, and social policies.
3. The article focuses solely on the negative aspects of population growth, without considering the potential benefits, such as an increase in the labor force and potential for economic growth.

Conclusion:
While the article provides a comprehensive overview of the issue of population growth, it falls short in addressing potential solutions and considering the potential benefits of population growth. It is important to consider both the negative and positive aspects of population growth in order to develop effective and sustainable solutions.

Prove if it is true that for a given output, a decrease in total private savings is never accompanied by an increase in aggregate investment, an increase in the budget deficit, and a decrease in the current account deficit. Answer using a mathematical formula.

Answers

It is not true that for a given output, a decrease in total private savings is never accompanied by an increase in aggregate investment, an increase in the budget deficit, and a decrease in the current account deficit. This can be proven using the national income identity formula:  Y = C + I + G + NX

Where Y is the output, C is the consumption, I is the investment, G is the government spending, and NX is the net exports (exports minus imports).

If there is a decrease in total private savings (S), this means that there is an increase in consumption (C). Since Y is constant, an increase in C must be accompanied by a decrease in one or more of the other components of the national income identity formula.

If there is an increase in aggregate investment (I), this means that there is a decrease in either G or NX, or both. An increase in the budget deficit means that there is an increase in G, so there must be a decrease in NX, which is equivalent to a decrease in the current account deficit.

Therefore, it is possible for a decrease in total private savings to be accompanied by an increase in aggregate investment, an increase in the budget deficit, and a decrease in the current account deficit.

In mathematical terms:

ΔS = -ΔC

ΔY = ΔC + ΔI + ΔG + ΔNX = 0

ΔI = -ΔC - ΔG - ΔNX

If ΔS < 0, then ΔC > 0, and if ΔI > 0, then ΔG > 0 and ΔNX < 0.

c) Find the CPI for all three year
Please answer b), c), d), and show your calculation steps if need to, thank you.

Answers

b)The GDP deflator for all three years, using year 1 as the base year  is  101.4

c) The CPI for all three year 105.

Year 1: Nominal GDP = (2 x 56500) + (22350 x 6000) + (480 x 15600) + (1500 x 750000) + (45 x 325000) + (9500 x 97850) = 2,340,270,000

Year 2: Nominal GDP = (1.9 x 550000) + (24120 x 6600) + (495 x 16800) + (1350 x 650000) + (47.5 x 330000) + (10740 x 99000) = 2,374,272,000

Year 3: Nominal GDP = (2.1 x 580000) + (517 x 1200) + (52 x 11000) = 2,410,816,000

Now, we can calculate the GDP deflator for all three years using the following formula: GDP Deflator = (Nominal GDP / Real GDP) x 100.

Year 1: Real GDP = (2 x 56500) + (22350 x 6000) + (480 x 15600) + (1500 x 750000) + (45 x 325000) + (9500 x 97850) = 2,340,270,000
GDP Deflator = (2,340,270,000 / 2,340,270,000) x 100 = 100

Year 2: Real GDP = (1.9 x 550000) + (24120 x 6600) + (495 x 16800) + (1350 x 650000) + (47.5 x 330000) + (10740 x 99000) = 2,362,010,000
GDP Deflator = (2,374,272,000 / 2,362,010,000) x 100 = 101.2

Year 3: Real GDP = (2.1 x 580000) + (517 x 1200) + (52 x 11000) = 2,400,084,000
GDP Deflator = (2,410,816,000 / 2,400,084,000) x 100 = 101.4

We can calculate the CPI for all three years using the following formula: CPI = (Price Year 2 / Price Year 1) x 100.

Year 1: Price = 2
Year 2: Price = 1.9
CPI = (1.9 / 2) x 100 = 95

Year 1: Price = 2
Year 3: Price = 2.1
CPI = (2.1 / 2) x 100 = 105

Answers

The analysis of the gravity equation in economics is used to predict the flow of trade between two countries based on their size and distance.

However, it has been found that trade within a country is generally greater than trade between countries. This is due to several factors.

First, within a country, there are fewer barriers to trade. There are no tariffs or quotas, and there is generally less regulation and bureaucracy involved in trading within a country than between countries.

Second, transportation costs are typically lower within a country than between countries. This is because there are no international borders to cross, and transportation infrastructure within a country is generally better than between countries.

Third, there is generally more trust and familiarity within a country than between countries. People are more likely to trust and do business with people from their own country than people from other countries.

Overall, these factors contribute to the greater amount of trade within a country compared to trade between countries. This is why the analysis of the gravity equation shows that trade within a country is greater than trade between countries.

Assume the government increases its spending by $1bn and raises taxes by $1bn. At the same time the central bank ensures that the interest rate does not change (LM is horizontal). According to the IS/LM model, which of the following statements IS correct?
(a) Output rises by exactly $1bn. (b) Output rises by less than $1bn. (c) Output rises by more than $1bn. (d) There is no effect on output or interest rate.

Answers

According to the IS/LM model, the correct answer is (b) Output rises by less than $1bn.

When the government increases its spending by $1bn, this leads to an increase in aggregate demand and an increase in output.

However, when the government also raises taxes by $1bn, this leads to a decrease in disposable income and a decrease in consumption, which in turn leads to a decrease in aggregate demand and a decrease in output. The net effect of these two policies is an increase in output that is less than $1bn.

Furthermore, the central bank's decision to keep the interest rate unchanged means that the LM curve is horizontal. This means that changes in fiscal policy will have no effect on the interest rate, but will only affect output.

An assignment is a type of short-term loan where the borrower sells its accounts receivables to the lender at a discount to face value. This means that the borrower is selling the rights to receive payment on outstanding invoices to the lender at a lower price than the original face value of the invoices.

This is a common practice in business financing, as it allows companies to get immediate cash flow without having to wait for their customers to pay their invoices.

The lender, in turn, collects the full amount of the invoices from the customers, making a profit on the difference between the discounted price they paid and the face value of the invoices. Therefore, the correct answer is option d.

e. Estimate the percentage change in the demand for good1 resulting from a 11% decrease in the price of good3.
(Give your answer to two decimal places, if required and do not use % sign in your answer)

Answers

The price elasticity of demand is -0.13, income elasticity of demand for good1 is 0.65, and income elasticity of demand for good2 is 0.06.

a. The price elasticity of demand (PED) is the measure of the responsiveness of the quantity demanded of a good to a change in its price. It is calculated as the percentage change in quantity demanded divided by the percentage change in price. In this case, the PED can be calculated as:

PED = (dQ1/dP1)*(P1/Q1)

Where dQ1/dP1 is the partial derivative of the demand function with respect to P1. From the given demand function, we can see that dQ1/dP1 = -1. Therefore, the PED is:
PED = (-1)*(192/Q1)
To find Q1, we need to plug in the given values of P1, P2, P3, and Y into the demand function:
Q1 = 952 - 192 + 0.75*122 - 0.5*466 + 0.05*19047
Q1 = 1484.35
Therefore, the PED is:
PED = (-1)*(192/1484.35)
PED = -0.13
The price elasticity of demand for good1 is -0.13.

b. The income elasticity of demand (YED) is the measure of the responsiveness of the quantity demanded of a good to a change in income. It is calculated as the percentage change in quantity demanded divided by the percentage change in income. In this case, the YED can be calculated as:
YED = (dQ1/dY)*(Y/Q1)
Where dQ1/dY is the partial derivative of the demand function with respect to Y. From the given demand function, we can see that dQ1/dY = 0.05. Therefore, the YED is:
YED = (0.05)*(19047/1484.35)
YED = 0.65
The income elasticity of demand for good1 is 0.65.

c. The cross price elasticity of demand (XED) between good1 and good2 is the measure of the responsiveness of the quantity demanded of good1 to a change in the price of good2. It is calculated as the percentage change in quantity demanded of good1 divided by the percentage change in price of good2. In this case, the XED can be calculated as:
XED = (dQ1/dP2)*(P2/Q1)
Where dQ1/dP2 is the partial derivative of the demand function with respect to P2. From the given demand function, we can see that dQ1/dP2 = 0.75. Therefore, the XED is:
XED = (0.75)*(122/1484.35)
XED = 0.06
The cross price elasticity of demand between good1 and good2 is 0.06.

d. The cross price elasticity of demand (XED) between good1 and good3 is the measure of the responsiveness of the quantity demanded of good1 to a change in the price of good3. It is calculated as the percentage change in quantity demanded of good1 divided by the percentage change in price of good3. In this case, the XED can be calculated as:
XED = (dQ1/dP3)*(P3/Q1)
Where dQ1/dP3 is the partial derivative of the demand function with respect to P3. From the given demand function, we can see that dQ1/dP3 = -0.5. Therefore, the XED is:
XED = (-0.5)*(466/1484.35)
XED = -0.16

The cross price elasticity of demand between good1 and good3 is -0.16.

e. To estimate the percentage change in the demand for good1 resulting from a 11% decrease in the price of good3, we can use the cross price elasticity of demand between good1 and good3 that we calculated in part d:
Percentage change in Q1 = XED * Percentage change in P3
Percentage change in Q1 = -0.16 * (-11%)
Percentage change in Q1 = 1.76%
The percentage change in the demand for good1 resulting from a 11% decrease in the price of good3 is 1.76%.

The Tale of the Slave Robert Nozick
Consider the following sequence of cases, which we shall call the Tale of the Slave, and
imagine it is about you.
1. There is a slave completely at the mercy of his brutal master's whims. He often is cruelly
beaten, called out in the middle of the night, and so on.
2. The master is kindlier and beats the slave only for stated infractions of his rules (not
fulfilling the work quota, and so on). He gives the slave some free time.
3. The master has a group of slaves, and he decides how things are to be allocated among them
on nice grounds, taking into account their needs, merit, and so on.
4. The master allows his slaves four days on their own and requires them to work only three
days a week on his land. The rest of the time is their own.
5. The master allows his slaves to go off and work in the city (or anywhere they wish) for
wages. He requires only that they send back to him three-sevenths of their wages. He also
retains the power to recall them to the plantation if some emergency threatens his land; and
to raise or lower the three-sevenths amount required to be turned over to him. He further
retains the right to restrict the slaves from participating in certain dangerous activities that
threaten his financial return, for example, mountain climbing, cigarette smoking.
6. The master allows all of his 10,000 slaves, except you, to vote, and the joint decision is made
by all of them. There is open discussion, and so forth, among them, and they have the power
to determine to what uses to put whatever percentage of your (and their) earnings they
decide to take; what activities legitimately may be forbidden to you, and so on.
Let us pause in this sequence of cases to take stock. If the master contracts this transfer of power so
that he cannot withdraw it, you have a change of master. You now have 10,000 masters instead of
just one; rather you have one 10,000-headed master. Perhaps the 10,000 even will be kindlier than
the benevolent master in case 2. Still, they are your master. However, still more can be done. A
kindly single master (as in case 2) might allow his slave(s) to speak up and try to persuade him to
make a certain decision. The 10,000-headed monster can do this also.
7. Though still not having the vote, you are at liberty (and are given the right) to enter into the
discussions of the 10,000, to try to persuade them to adopt various policies and to treat you
and themselves in a certain way. They then go off to vote to decide upon policies covering
the vast range of their powers.
8. In appreciation of your useful contributions to discussion, the 10,000 allow you to vote if
they are deadlocked; they commit themselves to this procedure. After the discussion you
mark your vote on a slip of paper, and they go off and vote. In the eventuality that they
divide evenly on some issue, 5,000 for and 5,000 against, they look at your ballot and count
it in. This has never yet happened; they have never yet had occasion to open your ballot. (A
single master also might commit himself to letting his slave decide any issue concerning him
about which he, the master, was absolutely indifferent.)
9. They throw your vote in with theirs. If they are exactly tied your vote carries the issue.
Otherwise it makes no difference to the electoral outcome.
The question is: which transition from case 1 to case 9 made it no longer the tale of a slave?

Answers

The transition from case 1 to case 9 in Robert Nozick's Tale of the Slave does not make it any longer the tale of a slave. This is because, despite the increasing freedoms and rights given to the slave throughout the cases, the slave is still ultimately under the control and authority of a master or masters.

Even in case 9, where the slave is allowed to vote and potentially have their vote count, they are still subject to the decisions and rules made by the majority of the 10,000 masters. The slave does not have true autonomy or self-determination, as they are still beholden to the will of others.

Therefore, the transition from case 1 to case 9 does not make it any longer the tale of a slave.

Consider an industry consisting of two firms. The firms engage in Cournot competition. The inverse of the aggregate demand is described by P = 17 − Q where Q = q1 + q2. Firm 1 standardized its production and can produce each unit at a constant cost of ✩4 per unit. In contrast, firm 2 uses non-standardized technology; as a result, firm 2’s cost of producing q2 units is q22 . What is the equilibrium market price? What is the output and profit of each firm in this equilibrium?

Answers

The equilibrium market price is P = 4, Firm 1 produces q1 = 4 units with a profit of 0, and Firm 2 produces q2 = 9 units with a profit of 45.

In Cournot competition, firms compete by setting output levels.

The aggregate output for the two firms is equal to the sum of their individual output levels, Q = q1 + q2.

The inverse of the aggregate demand is given by P = 17 - Q.

Firm 1's cost is a constant ✩4 per unit, while Firm 2's cost is q22.

Therefore, the market price will be determined by the quantity produced by the two firms, given the cost function and the inverse demand function.

In equilibrium, the market price is determined when the firms' marginal cost equals the market price. This is known as perfect competition.

Let us assume that firm 1 produces q1 units and firm 2 produces q2 units. The equilibrium price is determined when MC1 = MC2 = P.

In this case, MC1 = 4, and MC2 = q22, so we have the following equation to solve:

4 = q22 = 17 - Q = 17 - (q1 + q2)

This yields Q = 13. Plugging this value into the inverse demand function gives P = 17 - 13 = 4.

Therefore, the equilibrium price is P = 4.

The output and profit of each firm in this equilibrium can be found by substituting the value of Q into the cost functions for each firm. Firm 1 will produce q1 = 4 units, and the profit will be (4-4) x 4 = 0. Firm 2 will produce q2 = 9 units, and the profit will be (4-92) x 9 = 45.

Therefore, the equilibrium market price is P = 4, Firm 1 produces q1 = 4 units with a profit of 0, and Firm 2 produces q2 = 9 units with a profit of 45.

No, we should not worry if foreigners sell us goods cheaply. In fact, it can be beneficial for consumers as they can purchase goods at a lower price.

However, there are several arguments for why governments should protect domestic industry.

First, protecting domestic industry can help preserve jobs for workers in the country. If foreign goods are cheaper, domestic companies may not be able to compete and may go out of business, leading to job loss.

Second, protecting domestic industry can help maintain national security. If a country relies too heavily on foreign goods, it may become vulnerable if there is a disruption in the supply chain or if the foreign country decides to stop trading.

Third, protecting domestic industry can help promote economic growth and development. By supporting domestic companies, the government can help create a stronger economy and foster innovation.

In conclusion, while cheap foreign goods can be beneficial for consumers, there are several important reasons for governments to protect domestic industry, including preserving jobs, maintaining national security, and promoting economic growth.

What is an economic concept that is related to inflation?2. Explain how the concept is related to inflation.

Answers

One economic concept that is related to inflation is the consumer price index (CPI). It is related to inflation as it is a measure of inflation.

The CPI is a measure of the average change in prices that consumers pay for a basket of goods and services over time. It is one of the most widely used measures of inflation because it reflects the prices that consumers actually pay for the goods and services they purchase. When the CPI rises, it indicates that prices are increasing, which is a sign of inflation.

Conversely, when the CPI falls, it indicates that prices are decreasing, which is a sign of deflation. Therefore, the CPI is closely related to inflation and is often used to track changes in the overall level of inflation in an economy.

Question: Using the models of demand-pull and/or technological push to explain the interaction of technology and business performance in making Ford's Model T. Did the Ford get the ideas for innovations from the customers or it were the firms’ engineers who recognizes that a specific piece of new technological knowledge resulted in the firms’ new products? Provide your analyses to prove your arguments.

Answers

The Ford Model T was an innovation that combined both demand-pull and technological push models. Demand-pull models suggest that customer demand for a certain product or service encourages businesses to develop it.

In the case of the Model T, customers were seeking a reliable and affordable automobile, which drove Ford to innovate. On the other hand, technological push models suggest that the development of new technology encourages businesses to find new applications for the technology. Ford's engineers were the ones to recognize that a certain new technological knowledge, such as the assembly line, could be used to create a reliable and affordable automobile. Therefore, it was a combination of customer demand and technological innovation that drove the development of the Model T.

According to the law of demand, as prices decrease, the quantity demanded

Answers

Demand typically decreases when a good or service's price goes up because fewer people are willing or able to pay the higher price.

The law of demand and supply

According to the law of demand, as prices decrease, the quantity demanded increases, all other factors being held constant. This means that there is an inverse relationship between the price of a good or service and the quantity of that good or service that consumers are willing and able to buy.

This law is based on the idea that consumers have a limited amount of income to spend on goods and services, and that they will seek to maximize their satisfaction or utility by purchasing the goods and services that provide the most value for their money. When the price of a good or service decreases, consumers are able to purchase more of it with the same amount of income, making it more attractive relative to other goods and services.

As a result, when the price of a good or service decreases, the quantity demanded tends to increase because consumers are willing and able to buy more of it at the lower price. Conversely, when the price of a good or service increases, the quantity demanded tends to decrease because consumers are less willing and able to buy it at the higher price.

A) Draw an aggregate supply and demand curve that illustrates the economy mentioned above. Label equilibrium output Yp and Price Level P1

What is economy?

Economy is an organized system of production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services. It is the basis of a society's wealth, and it provides its members with the means to purchase the things they need and want.

The aggregate supply and demand curve for the economy above is shown in the diagram below, with equilibrium output Yp and Price Level P1 labeled. The aggregate demand curve (AD) is downward sloping and represents the amount of output that will be demanded at different price levels. The aggregate supply curve (AS) is upward sloping and represents the amount of output that can be supplied at different price levels. In equilibrium, Yp is the output at which AD equals AS and P1 is the price level at which quantity demanded and quantity supplied are equal.

B) Assume government spending increase 1000%. Show what happens to the economy in the short run. Be sure to label any new curves, output, and price levels.

(i) Identify which curved shifted and whether it increased or decreased.

In this scenario, the aggregate demand curve (AD) will shift to the right, indicating an increase in aggregate demand.

(ii) Identify whether a recessionary or inflationary gap has occurred.

An inflationary gap has occurred, as the shift in the aggregate demand curve has resulted in a higher equilibrium output (Y2) and a higher price level (P2).

(iii) Identify if any demand pull inflation, cost push inflation, or stagflation has occurred.

Demand-pull inflation has occurred, as the increase in government spending has resulted in an increase in aggregate demand, leading to higher output and prices.

C) On the same graph, show and explain how the graph will eventually “self correct” back to long run equilibrium.

In the long run, the economy will return to its original equilibrium point (Yp, P1) due to the increase in cost of production caused by the higher price level. As wages and other input prices increase, firms will be less able to produce at the same output level, resulting in a decrease in aggregate supply (AS). This will cause the aggregate supply curve to shift to the left, until it intersects the aggregate demand curve at the equilibrium point (Yp, P1). This process of inflationary pressures causing a decrease in the aggregate supply curve is known as the Phillips Curve.

In a closed economy with three activities, the following data are known.
a)Draw up an input-output table. B) Calculate Chenery-Watanabe coefficients and identify
C)what are the sectors with the highest backward and forward linkages.
Agriculture uses industrial products to the value of 3, services to the value of 1 and agriculture
itself to the value of 5. Its output is 21. Wages are paid for a value of 2 and gross operating
surplus for a value of 10.
Industry uses agricultural, industrial and service products, respectively, worth 2, 6 and 3.
Its value added is 13 and the gross operating surplus is 6.
Services use intermediate inputs worth 12. They pay wages of 7 and have a gross operating
surplus of 9.
Agricultural production destined for use by other activities totals a value of 8. Industrial
products destined for other branches total a value of 14, those of services destined for
intermediate consumption 10 and 18 those destined for final demand.

Answers

The coefficient are as follows: - Agriculture: 0.23 - Industry: 0.24 and - Services: 0.39

The sector with the highest backward linkage is the one with the highest Chenery-Watanabe coefficient, which is the services sector with a coefficient of 0.39.

To draw up an input-output table, we need to first determine the total output of each sector and then allocate that output to the different uses (intermediate consumption, final demand, and value added). The total output of each sector is the sum of intermediate consumption, final demand, and value added. We can use this information to fill in the input-output table as follows:
                     | Agriculture | Industry | Services | Final demand | Value added | Total output |

| Agriculture              5            2                12                  8                     12                    39
| Industry                   3            6                 3                  14                     19                    45
| Services                  1             3                 0                  18                     16                   38
| Intermediate           9            11                15                  0                      0                    35
| consumption          0            0                 0                   0                      0                     0
| Final demand         8           14                18                   0                      0                   40
| Value added         12           19                16                   0                      0                    47
| Total input            29          44               49                   0                       0                  122

To calculate the Chenery-Watanabe coefficients, we need to divide the intermediate consumption of each sector by the total output of that sector. The coefficients are as follows:
- Agriculture: 9/39 = 0.23
- Industry: 11/45 = 0.24
- Services: 15/38 = 0.39

The sector with the highest forward linkage is the one whose products are most used by other sectors as intermediate inputs, which is the industry sector with a total intermediate consumption of 11.

You are given the following long-run cost function:
TC = 200Q - 25Q2 + 1.5Q3
What level of Q will economies of scale ends and diseconomies of
scale begin?

Answers

The long-run cost function does not have a minimum value, it is always decreasing, meaning that there are always economies of scale.

To find the level of Q at which economies of scale ends and diseconomies of scale begin, we need to find the point at which the long-run cost function has a minimum value. This is where the marginal cost (MC) equals zero.

To find the MC, we take the first derivative of the long-run cost function:

MC = dTC/dQ = 200 - 50Q + 4.5Q2

Setting MC equal to zero and solving for Q gives us:

0 = 200 - 50Q + 4.5Q2

Rearranging and using the quadratic formula, we get:

Q = (-50 ± √(502 - 4(4.5)(200)))/(2(4.5))

Q = (-50 ± √(2500 - 3600))/(9)

Q = (-50 ± √(-1100))/(9)

Since the square root of a negative number is imaginary, there are no real solutions for Q. This means that the long-run cost function does not have a minimum value, and therefore there is no level of Q at which economies of scale ends and diseconomies of scale begin.

Consider a product market with three consumers X, Y and Z with demand function QX = 6 – PX, QY = 3 – ½PY and QZ = 12 – PZ respectively, where P is the price in dollars and QX, QY and QZ are the quantities demanded by Consumer X, Y and Z respectively.If the product is public good, obtain the marginal social benefit function and draw the diagram. Determine the optimal quantity of the product in the market if the marginal cost of the product is constant at (a) $4, (b) $9 and (c) $16.

Answers

a.) The optimal quantity of the product in the market is 6.5 units.

b.) The optimal quantity of the product in the market is 9 units.

c.) The optimal quantity of the product in the market is 16 units.

The marginal social benefit function is obtained by summing the individual demand functions of the consumers. Therefore, the marginal social benefit function is:
MSB = QX + QY + QZ
MSB = (6 - PX) + (3 - ½PY) + (12 - PZ)
Since the product is a public good, the price is the same for all consumers, so PX = PY = PZ = P. Therefore, the marginal social benefit function can be simplified to:
MSB = (6 - P) + (3 - ½P) + (12 - P)
MSB = 21 - (5/2)P
To determine the optimal quantity of the product in the market, we need to set the marginal social benefit equal to the marginal cost and solve for the quantity.
(a) If the marginal cost is constant at $4, then:
21 - (5/2)P = 4
(5/2)P = 17
P = 6.8
Q = 21 - (5/2)(6.8) = 6.5
Therefore, the optimal quantity of the product in the market is 6.5 units.

(b) If the marginal cost is constant at $9, then:
21 - (5/2)P = 9
(5/2)P = 12
P = 4.8
Q = 21 - (5/2)(4.8) = 9
Therefore, the optimal quantity of the product in the market is 9 units.

(c) If the marginal cost is constant at $16, then:
21 - (5/2)P = 16
(5/2)P = 5
P = 2
Q = 21 - (5/2)(2) = 16
Therefore, the optimal quantity of the product in the market is 16 units.

2.When MPC (marginal propensity to consume) increases and investment decreases, goods market equilibrium output increases.(FALSE)

3.When disposable income equals zero, consumption equals zero.(FALSE)

4 . The multiplier is greater than 1 if T = 0 and G = 0.( TRUE)

Determine true or false

2. False. When MPC increases, it means that people are more likely to spend their additional income on consumption rather than saving. However, when investment decreases, it means that businesses are less likely to invest in new projects and expand production. This will lead to a decrease in the goods market equilibrium output, not an increase.

3. False. Consumption does not necessarily equal zero when disposable income is zero. This is because people can still consume goods and services even when they have no disposable income by using their savings or borrowing money.

4. True. The multiplier is the ratio of the change in equilibrium output to the change in autonomous spending. When T (taxes) and G (government spending) are both equal to zero, the multiplier is greater than 1 because there are no leakages in the economy.

This means that all of the additional income generated from an increase in autonomous spending will be spent on consumption, leading to a larger increase in equilibrium output.
