Joshua Trees
by Jane Rodgers (excerpt)

In this excerpt, Joshua Tree National Park Vegetation Specialist Jane Rodgers describes the significance of the park's signature tree: the Joshua Tree. Dr. Suess, a children's book writer and illustrator, wrote The Lorax in 1971 as a cautionary tale about the dangers of environmental destruction. In it, the Lorax, a creature who "speaks for the trees," urges respect for nature. The quirky illustrations of trees in the book are reminiscent of the distinctive shape of Joshua trees.

Read paragraphs 5 and 6 from the passage.

[5] Concurrent with Mormon settlers, ranchers and miners arrived in the high desert with high hopes of raising cattle and digging for gold. These homesteaders used the Joshua tree's limbs and trunks for fencing and corrals. Miners found a source of fuel for the steam engines used in processing ore.

[6] Today we enjoy this yucca for its grotesque appearance, a surprising sight in the landscape of biological interest. The Joshua tree's life cycle begins with the rare germination of a seed, its survival dependent upon well-timed rains. Look for sprouts growing up from within the protective branches of a shrub. Young sprouts may grow quickly in the first five years, then slow down considerably thereafter. The tallest Joshua trees in the park loom a whopping forty-plus feet high, a grand presence in the desert. Judging the age of a Joshua tree is challenging: these "trees" do not have growth rings like you would find in an oak or pine. You can make a rough estimate based on height, as Joshua trees grow at rates of one-half inch to three inches per year. Some researchers think an average lifespan for a Joshua tree is about 150 years, but some of our largest trees may be much older than that. . . .

In paragraphs 3 and 4, how does Tannen explain women's tenden- cies to use "covert" communication strategies? Write down at least two reasons that the author provides .

Answers

Answer:

Tannen explains women's tendencies to use "covert" communication strategies in paragraphs 3 and 4 by providing two reasons:

One reason is that women often feel that they lack power in their interactions with men, so they try to use language to get what they want. Women may feel that they are not taken seriously or that their ideas are dismissed, so they use language to convey their intentions more subtly. Tannen argues that this is a way for women to exert some control in their interactions with men, even when they are not in positions of authority.Another reason that Tannen provides is that women often have different goals than men when it comes to communication. Tannen argues that men often view communication as a way to establish dominance or to achieve a specific goal, while women view communication as a way to build and maintain relationships. Women may use more indirect language or nonverbal cues in order to convey their emotions or to build connections with others. This difference in communication goals can lead to misunderstandings and frustration between men and women.

It is the final chapter of the book, and as such, it serves as a conclusion to the story. In this chapter, the reader learns about the aftermath of Jefferson's execution and the impact it has on the community. The tone of the chapter is different from the rest of the book. The previous chapters are more somber and introspective, while Chapter 28 has a more optimistic and forward-looking tone. The chapter is about the future of the community and the hope that things will change for the better.

In what other way is chapter 28 of "A Lesson Before Dying" by Ernest J. Gaines different from other chapters?

Chapter 28 of "A Lesson Before Dying" differs from other chapters in that it serves as a conclusion to the story, has a different tone and style of writing, and is more focused on the community as a whole.

Chapter 28 is more focused on the community as a whole, rather than on individual characters. While previous chapters focus on the relationship between Grant and Jefferson, Chapter 28 is about the impact of Jefferson's execution on the community and how it brings people together.

The chapter has a more formal and structured style of writing, with shorter paragraphs and less dialogue. This is likely because the chapter is intended to provide closure to the story, rather than to move the plot forward.

What were some influences that caused language to change from Old English to Middle English to modern English? How is our language today similar and different than Old or Middle English?

Answers

Explanation:

The English language has evolved over time due to a variety of influences, including historical events, migration, cultural exchange, and technological developments. Here are some of the main influences that caused the language to change from Old English to Middle English to Modern English:

Norman Conquest: In 1066, William the Conqueror invaded England and brought with him the Norman French language. This led to the infusion of French vocabulary and grammar into English, resulting in the Middle English period.

Printing Press: In the 15th century, the invention of the printing press made it possible to produce books on a large scale, which helped to standardize the English language.

Renaissance: The Renaissance brought about a renewed interest in classical literature and language, which led to the adoption of Latin and Greek words into English.

Modern English has a much larger vocabulary, due to the incorporation of words from many different languages, and it also has simplified grammar and pronunciation. Overall, the English language has been shaped by a rich and diverse history of influences, which continue to shape it to this day.
