Explain how Sophocles uses other characters, plot events, and dramatic elements to create the protagonist in the play.

Answers

In order to develop the character of Antigone, who is the protagonist, Sophocles uses other characters, plot events, and dramatic events. The first thing we see is the comparison of Antigone with her sister Ismene. Antigone and Ismene are complete opposites. Antigone is more of a rebel, and family oriented, whilst Ismene stays loyal to the King's authority. Antigone believes she has an obligation to her family, specifically to her late brother Polyneices, to give him a proper burial. It is seen further that the sisters are a direct reflection of the two brothers who died fighting each other. Polyneices and Antigone are rebels, and Eteocles and Ismene are loyal to the King. Sophocles further develops Antigone through the exposition of the play. In the exposition it describes the tragedies of both Oedipus and Jocasta, the siblings parents, and Polyneices and Eteocles. Giving this background to her family helps to further her development as a character. As stated above, Antigone and Polyneices value family/divine loyalty over civil obedience. Knowing this, it can be inferred that Antigone will go to great lengths in order to maintain this loyalty to her family and the divine, even if she is put to death like Polyneices. Lastly, it can be seen through stage directions the further explanation of Antigone's character. In the beginning stage directions, it is seen that Antigone takes Ismene to the outside of his palace, and she explains her plans to break Creon's laws. This shows that she rebels against the King's authority. Also, Antigone is "leading" Ismene out of the palace to talk to her about this, which further shows that she is strong. In the ending stage directions, Antigone walks away from the palace while Ismene slowly walks back to it. This further shows that Antigone is a rebel and Ismene is obedient to the King.

Hope this helps!!

Sophocles uses other characters, plot events, and dramatic elements to create the protagonist in the play by comparing Antigone with Ismene, who was her sister.

While Antigone can be seen to be a rebel, Ismene is loyal to the authority of the king. There's an obligation from Antigone to her late brother Polyneices and she wanted a proper burial for him.

Antigone can also be seen to be strong and courageous, she wanted to break the Croen laws, this depict that she isn't afraid of the king and went against his rule.

In the ending, while Ismene was walking slowly back into the palace, Antigone was walking away. This further means that she's a rebel.

It is a prohibition of blasphemy, specifically, the misuse or "taking in vain" of the name of the God of Israel, or using His name to commit evil, or to pretend to serve in His name while failing to do so. Speak casually or idly of someone, as in There he goes, taking my name in vain again. This idiom originated as a translation from the Latin of the Vulgate Bible (Exodus 20:7), “to take God's name in vain,” and for a time was used only to denote blasphemy and profanity. the commandment “You shall not steal” as an expression of the commandment to love your neighbor as yourself. ... The seventh commandment forbids unjustly taking or keeping the goods of one's neighbor and wronging him in any way with respect to his goods. Exodus 20:7 says: “Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.” ... The simplest meaning of this name for God refers to His self-existence or His eternality (God has always existed).
Originally Answered: Is saying “oh my god” really using God's name in vain? Yes, it is. Any time you take the name of Deity and remove it from its sacred context, you are using God's name in vain. To use His name in vain means to use it in an empty or superfluous way.

The Supreme Court’s decisions in Terry v. Ohio (1967) and Horton v. California (1990) both held that the police

may, in certain cases, search individuals or seize their property without a warrant.
must never, even with reasonable cause, carry out a stop and frisk.
must always have a warrant to seize evidence, even if it is in plain view.
may never violate the Fourth Amendment protections concerning searches and seizures.

Answers

Answer:

Explanation:

may, in certain cases, search individuals or seize their property without a warrantthis is the correct answer. The fourth Amendment says that unreasonable searches are prohibited, and that police have to have a warrant to carry them out. However, these two cases ended up with the landmark decision by the Supreme court. Terry v. Ohio concluded that officers can stop the suspect and frisk with a reasonable suspicion that they have committed or planned to commit the crime. Horton v. California similarly concluded that police can collect evidence in plain view and that this is no violation of the Fourth Amendment. Therefore, these cases were not against the Fourth Amendment, and the Supreme court held that if the police have a reasonable doubt that a person is suspicious they can frisk and size property in plain view.

must never, even with reasonable cause, carry out a stop and frisk – is not the right answer. Supreme Court decided that, if the cause is reasonable, police can carry the search without the warrant.

must always have a warrant to seize evidence, even if it is in plain view – is not the correct answer. The conclusion was that police don’t always have to have a warrant.

may never violate the Fourth Amendment protections concerning searches and seizures – this is not the right answer. These cases concluded that the Fourth Amendment can be omitted in reasonable cases.

Read the excerpt from The Odyssey.

Plunder we took, and we enslaved the women,
to make division, equal shares to all—
but on the spot I told them: 'Back, and quickly!
Out to sea again!' My men were mutinous,
fools, on stores of wine. Sheep after sheep they
butchered by the surf, and shambling cattle,
feasting,—while fugitives went inland, running
to call to arms the main force of Cicones.

Which is the most effective paraphrase of this excerpt?

When Odysseus and his men arrived on the island of Cicones, they enslaved women and feasted on the sheep and cattle they had butchered by the sea.
Although Odysseus tells his men that they need to return quickly to the ship, the men are too busy dividing their findings into equal shares for everyone.
Odysseus warns his men to return to the ship, but many of the men did not listen and instead ran inland to see what else they could take for themselves.
The men continued their acts of greed despite Odysseus’s commands to stop and return to the ship, and the fugitives of Cicones ran inland to fetch help.
