If the United States was founded on equal rights, why have so many people had to struggle for equal rights since its founding?

Answers

Answer 1

Answer:

On Wednesday, Virginia became the 38th state to vote to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment — thus fulfilling the requirement that three-quarters of the states must approve an Amendment in order to add it to the U.S. Constitution. Since the Amendment was proposed a century ago, the U.S. has never been so close to enshrining the equality of all people, regardless of sex, in its bedrock legal document.

But that doesn’t mean the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) will be added to the Constitution any time soon. There will likely be a long fight in the courts or in the U.S. legislature before that happens, as the legislators who originally passed the Amendment in 1972 set, and then extended, a time limit for ratification by the states. That deadline passed more than three decades ago.

Decades would pass before the Equal Rights Amendment would gain real momentum. By that point, both men and women had won protections in the workplace, and the women of the second-wave feminist movement — including some who had participated in the fight for civil rights in the 1960s — were pushing for equality in their jobs, universities and homes. The Equal Rights Amendment was written by Alice Paul (1885-1977), the founder of the National Woman’s Party.

Born to a New Jersey family of Quakers who highly valued education, Paul studied at colleges and universities in the U.S. and the United Kingdom and earned an impressive number of degrees, including a Master’s and doctorate in sociology from the University of Pennsylvania, a law degree from Washington College of Law, and law Master’s and doctoral degrees from American University. But her life’s work really came into focus after she joined demonstrations for the British suffragist movement in the early 1900s. When she returned to the U.S. in 1910, she pushed American suffragists to try the confrontational techniques she’d seen applied in Britain, including civil disobedience.

Concerned that the National American Woman Suffrage Association was too moderate, in 1913 Paul and Lucy Burns formed the Congressional Union for Woman Suffrage, which was later reconstituted as the National Woman’s Party, and employed more aggressive tactics. The group used parades, petitions, protests and pickets to push for the right to vote. In 1917, Paul was sentenced to seven months in prison for picketing the White House, and was force-fed after going on a prison hunger strike.

After women successfully won the right to vote in 1920, the National Woman’s Party turned its attention to the next steps. Jessica Neuwirth, a women’s rights lawyer and a founder of the ERA Coalition, a current-day campaign to pass the amendment, tells TIME that suffrage advocates saw their work as remedying the intentional omission of women from the U.S. Constitution.

Paul’s crusade in the 1920s was unsuccessful, but in the 1950s, Michigan Congresswoman Martha Griffiths took up the torch. A former judge elected to the House in 1954, Griffiths worked to have sex discrimination added to Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and pushed the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission to double down on its enforcement of the Act. She also introduced the amendment on the House floor every year, but was unsuccessful until 1970, when Griffiths filed a discharge position that forced the legislation out of committee and led to the amendment being passed by the House. Although the Senate failed to pass it that legislative session, Griffiths reintroduced it the following year. It passed the House on Oct. 12, 1971 and the Senate on March 22, 1972. In passing the Equal Rights Amendment, Congress had set a seven-year deadline for ratification.

“Well, if you fast forward to 2019, without the Equal Rights Amendment having passed, we’re trying to figure out how to deal with bathrooms in a multi-gendered universe. And we’re trying to figure out, should in fact women be drafted if men are drafted?” says Condit. ”And while we were are unsettled as a culture about these new questions, they did not fail to emerge because we didn’t have an Equal Rights Amendment.” \

Condit notes that many of the states that failed to pass the Equal Rights Amendment had few women in their state legislatures, and historically had poor records of protecting the rights of both women and people of color. Virginia legislators’ decision to approve the Equal Rights Amendment means that the Amendment has fulfilled the requirement for three-fourths of the states to ratify a Constitutional Amendment. However, the ERA still faces another major obstacle: a past Congress had set a deadline for the Amendment’s ratification.

Going forward, that means that Congress could potentially vote to eliminate the deadline, or it could be challenged in court. Although American women have made significant gains in equality since the 1970s — and certainly since the 1920s — advocates say that an Equal Rights Amendment could still have a profound effect on the law and on American society.

Writing a Poem about Social injustice

Answers

Answer:

There are those in the world who are dying,

Because they don’t get the care that they need,

Which does not stop them as they keep trying

To stay alive, waiting for one good deed.

There are those in the world who just don’t care,

They walk on the other side of the road,

Helping people in need, they would not dare

Regard it, they would rather write an ode.

People who are less fortunate than us,

Do suffer but you don’t hear them complain,

About their condition, there is no fuss,

But there are some of them that go insane.

We should think about those in need each day,

Even just a little deed, goes a long way.

Early in the story, what evidence are we given that the Happylife Home system has not made either of the adults particularly happy? What message might Bradbury be trying to deliver here?

Answers

Answer and Explanation:

This question is about "The Veldt".

Through this story Bradbury wants to show readers the danger that exists in becoming too dependent on technology and how it can destroy the family unit, provoke addictions and promote destruction. Through this message, he shows how adults are not satisfied with Lar Happylife. This is because the mother of the family is bothered by the fact that the house has replaced the role of mother and wife of her, while the father of the family, is bothered by the way that the children are relating to the house.

What is an injury?

An injury is any physiological damage to living tissue caused by immediate physical stress. An injury can occur intentionally or unintentionally and may be caused by blunt trauma, penetrating trauma, burning, toxic exposure, asphyxiation, or overexertion. Injuries can occur in any part of the body, and different symptoms are associated with different injuries.

Treatment of a major injury is typically carried out by a health professional and varies greatly depending on the nature of the injury. Traffic collisions are the most common cause of accidental injury and injury-related death among humans. Injuries are distinct from chronic conditions, psychological trauma, infections, or medical procedures, though injury can be a contributing factor to any of these.

Several major health organizations have established systems for the classification and description of human injuries.

I actually have been judged by the way I look plenty of times. I've had my fair shares of these experiences. People often have a tendency to observe a person once they meet someone new or in the event that they see a person in general and now and again people have a tendency to be inaccurate by these habits. It could also be as easy as your clothing, the manner you place your hands, the manner you speak etc. Although this stuff can inform lots approximately someone now and again it's just a character people tackle due to the fact all of us realize a person is judging them or they themselves are judging a person as well .
One of my experiences are with teachers after I was in sixth grade I had a bad mind-set after I became told to be quiet when I spoke up and I became criticized for that, I in no way did my work nor listened to my teachers they thought I became a lost cause till I met a person who noticed I had capability she helped me through the year until now she helped me show all my teachers wrong that I could actually do something in my life. All I wanted was a bit of help and she helped me even though I might not have the high-quality grades I usually strive for, especially with work and all and but she continues to be right here supporting me that is certainly considered one among my experiences.
In conclusion, no person should choose some other person due to the fact it is able to be a misjudgment or a easy mistake due to the fact now and again people have a small insignificant however it would not outline who they are everyone is unique so its higher to get to realize a person earlier than judging. Even in case you're judging a person as a minimum do not be negative and ensure your assumption is accurate.

For the story "the open window"

Answers

Answer:

The setting of "The open window" is in England at Mrs. Sappletons and many lines suggest during Autumn time. This story was also published in the 1900's meaning this must be the time period.

The commentary that the author is making is while it is hard to get away from stress and anxiety you can never really escape reality. While Framton Nuttel out protagonist believed that leaving the city and going to a house far away from his troubles he only found more by being told a frightening story.

The behaviors back then were mainly being polite and opening your door to those in need. Also being kind to those you care about. This would explain why Mrs. Sappleton was willing to allow Framton to come to her house to relax. Women were still in the house cleaning while men did all the work. This explains why Mrs. Sappleton isn't with her husband hunting and why only the men in this story return from hunting.

Monologues for Girls: Monologue One: Suppose all ya ever had for breakfast was onion rolls. Then one day, in walks (gasp) a bagel! You'd say, 'Ugh, what's that?' Until you tried it! That's my problem -I'm a bagel on a plate full of onion rolls. Nobody recognizes me! Listen, I got 36 expressions. Sweet as pie and tough as leather. And that's six expressions more than all those...Barrymores put together. Instead of just kicking me, why don't they give me a lift? Well, it must be a plot, 'cause they're scared that I got...such-a gift! 'Cause I'm the greatest star, I am by far, but no one knows it. Wait -they're gonna hear a voice, a silver flute. They'll cheer each toot, hey, she's terrific!, when I expose it. Now can't you see to look at me that I'm a natural, I just feel, I've so much to offer. Kid, I know I'd be divine because I'm a natural cougher (coughs) -some ain't got it, not a lump. I'm a great big clump of talent! Laugh, they'll bend in half. Did you ever hear the story about the travelling salesman? A thousand jokes, stick around for the jokes. A thousand faces. I reiterate. When you're gifted, then you're gifted. These are facts, I've got no axe to grind. What are ya, blind? In all of the world so far, I'm the greatest star! No autographs, please. What? You think beautiful girls are gonna stay in style forever? I should say not! Any minute now they're gonna be out! FINISHED! Then it'll be my turn!Monologue Two:Oh Daaaaaaad!...Do we have to go to Grandma's house? I don't know what makes you think going to Grandma's house is so much fun; you get up early and polish the car like we're going someplace cool, like the beach. Is it just me, or does her house smell like an old antique store couch...Yuk! And besides that, I'm the one she latches onto, to listen to all her old stories...well, I'm sorry if I can't appreciate her "WISDOM" right now...and Dad, let's face it, even you can admit the lady's a little bit crazy. One day I was going into the kitchen to get myself a drink and I heard her talking to somebody, I didn't want to disturb her, so I was really quiet. She was asking Grandpa how much salt he'd like in the stew,..and he's been dead for ten years! I mean, come on! And another thing, I'm sorry, but her cooking is awful too...and OH!...OH!...and what was that disgusting stuff she made us last time for supper...BOILED OKRA?...That's just wrong! It felt like a hairy clam going down my throat. It took me three or four sips of Coke after each bite to get it down, and stay down....eeeeew I can still taste it! Dad can't we just skip this visit? I mean, Christmas is only four months away. I'm sure she wouldn't mind if we just called her......Pleeease!

Monologue Two (for boys):Miss Meyers, can you just answer me just one question?...Why is it that I have to take P.E.every stinking year, because really...I want to know. I mean every year, it's exactly the same, I'm forced to humiliate myself in front of the rest of the class. It's not so bad for the kids who are athletes, but for the rest of us, like me, it's not so easy.(Beat) Yes, Miss Meyers...I know, I know...P.E. is just as important as algebra and biology, and yes I agree that you should get a grade based on your abilities and skills. But everyone has to take the same class! They don't have "Basic P.E." like they have "General Science" or "Basic Math"...that would be a whole different subject completely! And why do we have to rotate activities all the time, why can't we stick with one thing for awhile, that way I could redeem myself by getting better at something.Soccer and Basketball aren't so bad, but this body shouldn't be on a balance beam during gymnastics. I just become entertainment for the rest of the class. High school is humiliating enough without coming in five minutes after everyone else during the mile run...while they're showered and going to lunch, I'm just crossing the finish line. I already know the theory around fitness...it-is-a-part-of-a-well-rounded-education. But the least they could do is level the playing field for everyone. I know there's not much you can do for me, but thanks, for at least letting me get that off my chest...See you in the gym
