Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
Write a P.E.E.L Paragraph on, "How does Bronte evoke feelings of the Gothic tradition in Chapters 1 - 3?"
- Include at least 3 quotes to support your points
- Make reference to the conventions of the ‘Gothic’ - the setting of the Red Room, Jane’s fears, the notion of the ‘ghost’
Charlotte Bronte evokes the feelings o the Gothic tradition by fostering a sense of unease, mystery, and foreboding that captivates readers and sets the stage for the unfolding narrative.
In Chapters 1-3 of Charlotte Bronte's novel "Jane Eyre," the author evokes feelings of the Gothic tradition through various elements such as the setting of the Red Room, Jane's fears, and the notion of the 'ghost.' These elements contribute to the eerie atmosphere and sense of foreboding commonly associated with the Gothic genre.
One way Bronte evokes the Gothic tradition is through the description of the Red Room. The room itself is portrayed as a dark and oppressive space, inducing a sense of claustrophobia and unease. As Jane describes it, "The room was chill because it seldom had a fire; it was silent because remote from the nursery and kitchens, solemn because it was known to be so seldom entered" (Chapter 2). This depiction of the Red Room aligns with the Gothic convention of utilizing gloomy and mysterious settings to create a haunting ambiance.
Furthermore, Jane's fears contribute to the Gothic atmosphere. Her dread of the Red Room is intensified by her belief in the presence of her deceased uncle's ghost. She confesses, "There was a room with a window... and that window was boarded up; sometimes, I saw a ghost" (Chapter 1). This fear of the supernatural aligns with the Gothic tradition of incorporating elements of the paranormal or the unexplained.
Moreover, the notion of the 'ghost' adds to the Gothic ambiance in these early chapters. The ghost symbolizes the haunting past and serves as a reminder of the secrets and mysteries lurking within the story. Jane's belief in the ghost contributes to the overall sense of tension and unease. As she states, "I thought a ghost would come... I tried to be glad that... I was left alive" (Chapter 2). This fear of the supernatural presence adds a layer of darkness and suspense to the narrative, characteristic of the Gothic genre.
In conclusion, through the evocative description of the Red Room, Jane's fears, and the notion of the 'ghost,' Bronte effectively creates a Gothic atmosphere in Chapters 1-3 of "Jane Eyre." These elements align with the conventions of the Gothic genre, fostering a sense of unease, mystery, and foreboding that captivates readers and sets the stage for the unfolding narrative.

In a few (2-3) paragraphs, respond to Kennedy's ideas and use of rhetoric. Explain what you agree with and why, and tell in your own words what makes this speech so effective.
Answer:
President John F. Kennedy's Inaugural Address is a powerful speech that continues to inspire people today. One of the key ideas that resonates with me is his call to action for citizens to work towards the greater good. He famously says, "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country." This statement is a powerful reminder that we all have a responsibility to contribute to the betterment of society. I strongly agree with this sentiment because I believe that we all have a duty to use our talents and abilities to make the world a better place.
Kennedy's use of rhetorical devices is also impressive. His repetition of the phrase "let both sides" in reference to the Cold War is a powerful example of parallelism. This repetition emphasizes the need for cooperation and diplomacy between the United States and the Soviet Union in order to avoid a nuclear war. Additionally, his use of inclusive language, such as "we" and "us," creates a sense of unity and shared responsibility among the American people.
Overall, what makes Kennedy's speech so effective is his ability to inspire people to action through his use of persuasive language and powerful imagery. His message of unity, progress, and service continues to resonate with people today, and his call to action remains relevant. The speech is a testament to the power of rhetoric and its ability to motivate people towards positive change.

The Montgomery Bus Boycott
The Montgomery Bus Boycott of 1955-1956 was one of the most significant events of the Civil Rights Movement in the United States. Though it might have seemed like a fruitless endeavor to some when it began on December 1, 1955, the boycott was able to break segregation laws throughout Alabama.
The true spark of the boycott came unintentionally from Rosa Parks, now known as “the mother of the Civil Rights Movement.” As stipulated by a Montgomery city ordinance, African American bus riders were required to sit in the back of the bus. In addition, they were required to give up their seats to white riders if the “white seats” were taken. Ms. Parks, an African American seamstress born in 1913, obeyed the law and sat in the back of the bus. However, when a white man told her to give up her seat, she refused. The mere refusal was enough to get her arrested.
It is popular belief that Parks’ civil disobedience was merely the result of exhaustion. However, it is not widely known that plans were underway by others to soon challenge the Montgomery bus laws—and that Parks was well aware of this. Ms. Parks had belonged to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) since 1944. As a member of the Montgomery chapter, she knew that some civil rights leaders had been planning action to overturn the bus segregation laws for some time. Apparently, Ms. Parks’ action was impulsive although it hastened the battle for equality in Montgomery.
As a result of Ms. Parks’ arrest, the NAACP and other activists staged the now-famous bus boycott. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., began organizing the boycott immediately, and soon fliers were being sent around Montgomery. His call to action resulted in African Americans walking or carpooling rather than paying the fares of the Montgomery bus system. Since 70% of the city’s bus ridership was made up of African Americans, the bus system was hit hard financially.
Prompted by the activities in Montgomery, the United States Supreme Court put an end to the bus segregation laws. On November 13, 1956, it struck down the laws in not only Montgomery, but all of Alabama, stating that these laws violated the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. On December 20, 1956, the Montgomery buses were finally desegregated. The boycott had lasted 381 days.
It was very fitting that Ms. Parks would be one of the first African Americans to ride on the newly-desegregated buses and that Dr. King would go on to further victories for the Civil Rights Movement.

Dorian thought, and then immediately wished he hadn’t. "

Write a story about a tragic event where you almost drowned. What lesson did you or your parents/guardian learn about this event? Be descriptive.
Answer: Lesson I learned from tragic event is the importance of water safety..
Explanation:
It was a hot summer day, and my family and I had decided to spend the day at the beach. We arrived early in the morning and set up our umbrella and towels on the sand. I was thrilled to be at the beach, and I couldn't wait to jump into the water and cool off.
After a few hours of swimming and playing in the water, I decided to venture out a little further from the shore. I didn't realize how quickly the water could get deep and rough, and before I knew it, I was struggling to stay afloat. Panic set in as I realized that I was too far from the shore and too tired to swim back. I could feel myself sinking under the water, and I was running out of breath.
As I was about to give up and let the water consume me, a stranger appeared out of nowhere and pulled me up to the surface. He held onto me tightly and guided me back to the shore, where my family was waiting. I was coughing and sputtering, and I could feel the fear in my parents' eyes.
The lesson that my parents and I learned from this tragic event was the importance of water safety. They realized that they needed to be more vigilant about watching me while swimming and to make sure that I knew the risks of venturing out too far into the water. I learned that the water can be dangerous and that I needed to respect it and take precautions to stay safe.
From that day forward, my parents enrolled me in swimming lessons and made sure that I always wore a life jacket while in the water. I also learned to be more cautious and aware of my surroundings while swimming, and to never underestimate the power of the water. This event was a wake-up call for my family and me, and it taught us a valuable lesson about the importance of safety and responsibility while enjoying recreational activities.

Growing up, I had a close relationship with my younger sister, but as we entered our teenage years, we began to experience conflicts that strained our relationship. One particular conflict that stands out in my memory was over a dress that we both wanted to wear to a family event. We argued over who should get to wear it, and the argument quickly escalated into hurtful words and accusations. After some time, we both realized that our argument was not worth damaging our relationship, and we decided to take steps to resolve the conflict. We sat down and talked about our feelings, acknowledging that we both wanted to look our best for the event. We then came up with a solution that we both agreed on: we would each wear the dress for half of the event. This compromise allowed us both to feel good about our appearance and enjoy the event without any further conflict. Looking back, I realize that our conflict was not about the dress, but about our changing relationship and the need to find new ways to communicate and compromise. This experience taught me the importance of open communication, empathy, and compromise in resolving conflicts with loved ones.

Answer:
As soon as I stepped out of the house, I could feel the chill of the winter morning. It was still dark, and the streets were empty. I was on a journey to catch the early morning train, which would take me to my hometown. I had not visited my family in a while, and I missed them dearly.
The train station was a few miles away, and I started walking briskly towards it. I had to cross a small forest, and the trees were casting eerie shadows in the darkness. The only sound was of my footsteps crunching on the gravel path. The more I walked, the darker it became, and the more the shadows seemed to elongate.
As I exited the forest, I could see the first light of dawn breaking on the horizon. I quickened my pace, and soon reached the train station. The station was bustling with people, all trying to catch the early train.
I found my seat, settled in, and watched the landscape outside my window. As the train chugged along, I saw the countryside transform before my eyes. The barren winter trees gave way to green meadows, and the sun rose higher in the sky.
As the train approached my destination, I could feel my excitement mounting. I knew I would soon be reunited with my family. As I stepped off the train, I saw my parents waiting for me at the platform. We hugged and laughed, and I knew that this journey was worth it. I was home.
