Excerpt from The War of the World
By H. G. Wells
A singularly appropriate phrase it proved. Yet the next day there was nothing of this in the papers except a little note in the Daily Telegraph, and the world went in ignorance of one of the gravest dangers that ever threatened the human race. I might not have heard of the eruption at all had I not met Ogilvy, the well-known astronomer, at Ottershaw. He was immensely excited at the news, and in the excess of his feelings invited me up to take a turn with him that night in a scrutiny of the red planet. In spite of all that has happened since, I still remember that vigil very distinctly: the black and silent observatory, the shadowed lantern throwing a feeble glow upon the floor in the corner, the steady ticking of the clockwork of the telescope, the little slit in the roof—an oblong profundity with the stardust streaked across it. Ogilvy moved about, invisible but audible. Looking through the telescope, one saw a circle of deep blue and the little round planet swimming in the field. It seemed such a little thing, so bright and small and still, faintly marked with transverse stripes, and slightly flattened from the perfect round. But so little it was, so silvery warm—a pin’s head of light! It was as if it quivered, but really this was the telescope vibrating with the activity of the clockwork that kept the planet in view. As I watched, the planet seemed to grow larger and smaller and to advance and recede, but that was simply that my eye was tired. Forty millions of miles it was from us—more than forty millions of miles of void. Few people realize the immensity of vacancy in which the dust of the material universe swims
How does the story’s setting influence the plot?
A) The image of the planet creates a feeling of uncertainty.
B) The description of the room foreshadows coming danger.
C) The shadows in the room predict unforeseen events.
D) The simplicity of the equipment shows man’s lack of knowledge.
10)

Read the excerpt from "Animal Rights Debate.”
Animals deserve legal rights in a just society. The US Congress first addressed this issue in 1966 with the passage of the Animal Welfare Act, which sets standards for the care of animals in agriculture, research, and domestic life. The Animal Legal Defense Fund reports that animal cruelty is now illegal in all 50 states. Michigan State University’s College of Law even has an Animal Legal and Historical Center. Interestingly, European laws protect animals to a greater extent than US law. Animals are considered as more than property, and this approach furthers the idea that animals should have legal status and rights as sentient, or thinking, beings.

15 July 2017
Today I had been delighted to get a chance to exhibit my talent in front of my school mates. I had practiced music for several days for this day. As this was my first time, I had been nervous. I was called back stage by my sir to get ready for my performance. I got ready soon and had been praying God to help me. Priya madam called me on the stage to perform in the talent show. I went on the stage and my nervousness had gone. I had begun to sing my favorite song 'Laal Ishq' which was originally sung by Arijit Singh for the movie Ramleela. I had tried to carry the feel of the song. I had seen some of my classmates' faces. I could see them surprised. When I ended the song, I had heard loud claps from the audience. The claps had not ended until I got down from the dais. Some of the participants who are next to me had given compliments to me. Subash sir came to me and said,"You had got a good talent. Hope you excel." Mallika madam also came to me and said,"You did well but you can do better than this." It was one of my unforgettable moments. Talents such as acting, dancing, and magic were performed by others.
16 July 2017
Today I am so tensed because the winners of the talent show had to be announced. It was tough for the judges to decide the winner. Many students had performed different talents. When I had enquired my senior, he had said three things had been observed by the judges in the talent show. Confidence, Way of Presentation and Hard work are the three things seen in that show. I had been waiting for the announcement. Finally, my wait ended in the afternoon. To my surprise, I had been the second winner. Even though this was the second prize, it had been the first award for me in singing. In future, I wish to be a playback singer. I hope that my wish come true. My parents were happy. I was excited and happy.
