The Best Travel Experience Essay Ever

JULY 19, 2017 • ESSAY, TRAVEL TALES • VIEWS: 21076

Over the past seven years, I’ve been lucky enough to live and travel in many different countries. This has meant that I’ve regularly had experiences that other people dream of. When I think about my best travel experience ever, so many things jump out at me.

Learning to Scuba in the Great Barrier Reef. Bungy Jumping in New Zealand. Feeding elephants in Thailand. Teaching kids in Cambodia. Seeing the Christmas markets in Prague. And even cocktails on the beach in Mexico.

But one experience stands above the rest. And that was my trip to Myanmar. After meeting my bestie in Bangkok for some bonding time, we decided to take a trip to Myanmar. And after five hours of standing in the hot sun while we got our visas, I was almost ready to throw in the towel. It would all be worth it though.

We knew that wifi would be a struggle, which is why we committed to a digital detox. For our entire trip, we had to be in the moment, with no social media, no work, and complete focus on what we were doing and where we were.

For someone who is continually working and always connected, this was a challenge. But I do think it forced us to be present in a way that we wouldn’t have been if we were continually checking our phones.

First, we spent a few days in Yangon. While the Shwedagon Pagoda was a stand-out, the thing I really remember about Yangon was the food. We ate at an Indian place which is where I tasted the worst thing I’ve ever eaten. Still not sure what it was, but it tasted exactly like bile.

Next, we were on our way to Bagan. Bagan was magical with surprisingly good food, and more pagodas than we could shake a stick at. We hired a guide and spent a day on our e-bikes, clambering up some of the biggest temples and taking way too many photos.

But the highlight of the trip was the hot air balloon ride over the pagodas at sunrise. We were lucky to get a clear day, and many of the other rides had been cancelled due to poor weather. Actually standing in the hot air balloon was a weird feeling- it didn’t feel like I was floating in the air at all, and it was just like standing on the ground.

The pagodas were at their best at sunrise. They glowed in the sun, which picked up the gold and made it sparkle. While the ride was over too soon, and we had a somewhat bumpy landing, this still goes down as my best travel experience ever.

The triceratops filled his belly with the cool water from the stream.

There is no on family of African gods. Why is that? For African Pantheons

Answers

African mythology covers a vast area. The African continent includes so many countries, regions, languages, tribes, cultures and crossovers that the sheer diversity of prevailing Gods would seem overwhelming if there weren’t a few handy shortcuts.

Traditional African belief is overwhelmingly monotheistic. There may be spirits and ancestors floating around, but there’s only one God. Early missionaries made a complete pig’s ear of their research in this respect and seem to have delighted in cataloging as many ‘heathen’ Gods as they could possibly get away with.

African Creator Gods seem to follow a distinctive pattern — they are all extremely dissatisfied with their creations. There is much shaking of heads, turning away in sorrow and avoidance of contact. The humans are left to fend for themselves. Attempts to regain contact with their God by building a heavenly ladder are the subject of many an unhappy legend. On the whole, African Gods don’t like to be pestered, and humans have to learn to be content with their lot.

But while God sits in Heaven wringing his hands in despair, the ancestral spirits are very willing to take an active part in Earthly life. These are mostly into hunting and other practical subjects — with food, sex and booze as popular as always.

There is a remarkable innocence about the Gods of Africa. They seem naive and unworldly, believing the best of everyone and optimistically giving the benefit of the doubt to all and sundry. No wonder they are rudely disappointed when it turns out their badly-chosen favorites are up to no good.

Even communicating with their creation is full of problems. Vital messages of life and death are entrusted to whichever farmyard animal happens to be passing, and the resulting garble is likely to have profoundly unforeseen — and usually disastrous — consequences...

Cruising into a Driverless Future

Eerie as it may seem to drive alongside a car with no one behind the wheel, autonomous vehicles are poised to hit the roads in the next few years. A lawsuit between Uber and Waymo, Google’s self-driving car project, settled in February 2018 illustrates the fierce battle to develop driverless car technology. Many cars already employ semi-autonomous technology, such as parking assistance and lane monitoring. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) suggests that automated vehicles could promote safety on the road. According to NHTSA’s Federal Automated Vehicles Policy, 94 percent of car accidents are linked to human choice or error. Automated vehicles, the NHTSA writes, could reduce the frequency of crashes by eliminating some human error on the roads. The policy indicates positive features of automated vehicles beyond safety, including potential environmental benefits and increased mobility for those otherwise unable to drive. The cutting-edge technology, however, presents ethical questions and other concerns. Some research included in this roundup indicates that the environmental effects of widespread adoption of autonomous vehicles might not be positive. Safety benefits are not so clear-cut either.
The author organizes this passage by—
A) comparing and contrasting different findings on autonomous vehicles
B) explaining the best way to research the safety of autonomous vehicles
C) presenting in chronological order the progress of autonomous vehicles
D) describing the outcome of extensive research on autonomous vehicles

You have a brand-new audio translation app on your phone. Just as you click on it for the first time, your dog starts barking. Words begin to appear on the screen. Since you aren't speaking, you quickly realize that your dog's barking is being translated. Originally, this app was meant for you to know people are saying in Japan since you were going to take a trip there without knowing Japanese. All you wanted to know was if the app worked as expected. The words start making out a sentence: "Hide somewhere before they appear." You don't know what this means, but the sentence isn't finished, your dog continues to bark. "They're coming. Go hide quickly." You dash to the kitchen and hide in a human-sized cabinet. You hear your dog barking and someone smashing through the window on the second floor. Your translator starts gathering the translation from your dog, "Call the police, they're robbing you!". You dial 911 and explain the situation, but you didn't tell them about the translator. The police arrives and they arrest the people who broke into your home. You step out of the cabinet once you know everything's safe. Apparently, the police discovered that the robbers were actually huge criminals they've been hunting down for a month now and they've stolen almost about 2M+ dollars. They tried stealing your furniture. You're shocked by what happened and all you can do is cry and thank your dog. Not only that, but you also thank yourself for downloading that app. You decide to keep the app and you can talk to your dog everyday using it. Now you live a happy life with this app and your dog and you've always been safe because of your dog ever since then.
