Is a Penny Saved Worth Anything?

Thank you for inviting me here today to speak about our currency. I have studied the history of currencies for many years and feel strongly that the United States does not fully understand the consequences of keeping the penny in circulation.

Consider your own experiences with pennies. For example, if you spot a penny on the ground, do you stop to pick it up or walk on by? Is it worth it to collect enough pennies to roll them? Can you even buy anything with a penny? I doubt it.

There might have been a time when a penny would buy a few pieces of candy or a bottle of soda, but those days are long gone. I was surprised to hear that many people feel quite strongly that pennies are still valuable. I am obviously not one of them! Not only does it make financial sense to take the penny out of circulation, but it also makes environmental sense.

The penny has quite a legacy in United States history; it was one of the first coins made by our government. In 1792, Congress passed the Coinage Act, allowing for the minting of American coins. Pennies were made of copper, but the rising price of this metal eventually caused the government to change the composition. Today, pennies are made of a mix of copper and zinc.

Over its 228-year-old history, the penny has seen many changes, both in its composition and design. You might not know that the first pennies were minted with an image of Lady Liberty. Coin collectors still hunt far and wide to find some of the earliest versions. But just because these old pennies have value to collectors doesn’t mean we should still be making them.

As the cost of living continues to rise, the value of a penny decreases. It is clear to me that the penny no longer has a place or a purpose in American currency. In 2019, it cost around two cents to make a penny. This means that it literally costs about two cents to make one cent, and that is ridiculous! According to the U.S. Mint’s annual report from 2018, penny production operated at a loss of millions of dollars.

Producing pennies is also bad for the environment. Today’s pennies are made of zinc and copper, and mining those materials causes a lot of pollution. For every ton of copper mined, there are more than two tons of carbon dioxide produced. This means that producing pennies contributes to climate change. I don’t think anyone here can argue that making a one-cent coin is worth destroying our environment.

If you need yet another reason to remove pennies from circulation, consider this: we waste an enormous amount of time during sales transactions because of pennies. Looking for and counting out pennies by customers and cashiers adds around two seconds to a purchase. This adds up to twelve minutes a year! I am sure you can see how this hurts the economy by slowing down lines and therefore decreasing the number of transactions completed in a day.

Some studies show that people are in favor of keeping the penny in circulation. However, it is likely that those people have a sense of nostalgia. Perhaps they have fond memories of stuffing piggy banks full of pennies. Or maybe they enjoyed earning pennies for childhood chores. Whatever the reason, times have changed and people need to see the bigger picture.

There are other arguments for keeping the penny in circulation—for example, people who still use cash to purchase things. Also, charities benefit from all of those pennies dropped into containers at store check-out lines or at the drive through.

While these reasons are worth mentioning, the reality is that most charities will never see a significant number of pennies collected on their behalf. They have more effective ways to raise money. And saving pennies or being paid in pennies is a thing of the past. In fact, as a society we are moving away from using cash. The penny should be removed from circulation, saving the government—and, therefore, all of us taxpayers—time and money.

Question
Which claim made in "Is a Penny Saved Worth Anything?" is supported by reasons or evidence?

Using pennies hurts the economy by adding time to sales transactions

Write an argumentative essay for or against setting long-term goals to land a dream job.

That’s the prompt^^
I need a plain/ draft to go with it.
The essay has to be 5 paragraphs (intro, 3body, conclusion) with 5-8 sentences in each body paragraph. The other two need 4-5 sentences.

Answers

We may never know what comes in the future but I believe it is alright to try to shape it to have the best outcome possible. There is no better way to try and shape the future than setting goals. The main type of goals I will support are long term goals that will land you in your dream job. Even though long term goals might stress you out, it is very important to set goals for the future so you know what to aim for at each step of the way to your dream job. Even with counterclaims such as goals being too stressful, the is barely to no evidence to prove that so I believe setting goals is the right choice.

When setting goals, your are likely to have a bigger chance for success as demonstrated in a 2015 study by psychologist Gail Matthews that showed when people wrote down their goals, they were 33 percent more successful in achieving them than those who formulated outcomes in their head. Along with this, your goals for landing in your dream job will be the target to aim for. Without goals you might stumble upon more problems than when you have established goals to aim for. The difference between setting goals and formulating the outcome in your head is like setting up a target to shoot in a shooting range and just imagining a target. Obviously, you would be more successful when actually setting up a target. The same applies with goals, you are more successful when you actually set a goal.

Even with reason alone, you could infer that setting goals would most likely land you in your dream job. With goals you know what to shoot for and know how to get there. For example, if you want to become a doctor, your goals might be to complete an undergraduate education, pass MCAT examination, apply for medical school, and etc. Therefore, with these actually goals you can succeed in becoming a doctor because you know what to aim for. In addition to all the evidence, studies have shown that goals can motivate you and organize the path towards success.

Some counterclaims against goals are mostly based on feelings and not actually evidence. One example of this is the counterclaim that goals are too strict and don't give enough wiggle room. This is false because when setting goals, how you reach them is completely on how you want to reach them. Another counterclaim is that goals are too stressful and not worthwhile. This is also false due to the fact that you will have a higher success rate when setting goals and again, how stressful the goals might be is up to you.

Overall it is best to have goals set in stone to allow your self to succeed. One important factor is that goals are PROVEN to higher your success rate. Also if you don't set goals, you could be doing something wrong which could eventually affect your success in getting your dream job. If you use your reasoning skills you could infer that setting goals is the right way to go. Even though there are counterclaims, they are wrong because they are based on feelings and not actual evidence. If you set goals you can achieve anything with enough time.

Characters Different Points of View

Maze Runner

Gally

Introduction

The way you see a character all depends on the point of view you read from. In this report you will see how I view Gally from the maze runner, compared to how others see him.

A true antagonist?

Everyone sees Gally as an antagonist but a quote that I read made by Gally had me thinking past what was right in front of me. The quote was “The rules are the only thing that have ever held us together, why now are we questioning that?” so I did some research and according to the books and the movies, Gally has been in the glade for three years before Thomas arrived. I read all the books and watched all the movies over and over again and the word that kept popping into my head was the word “Fear”. I kept thinking and doing my research and came up with a question. Is Gally a true antagonist? My answer is no, and I’m willing to bet that you are going to agree with me after you finish reading this.

Theory and Evidence

Gally is looked upon as an antagonist, but during my studies and research I have reason to believe otherwise. Others read the books or the movies and see a stuck up hard headed bully, But once you dig deeper other things come to light. According to both the movies and the books, Gally has been in the maze for three years before Thomas arrived. During those three years, he has likely seen death multiple times. In fact during my research, I have come to find that a total of 30 gladers have died in the maze runner. As seen in one of the scenes in the movies where he is standing in front of a wall of stone, In the stone was etched in all of the names of the gladers, and in the same scene Gally is shown to be crossing out one of the names, the name in question was Alby’s, after the leader of the glade (Alby) died, Gally went to the deadheads where the stone wall with all the names of the gladers is. Because Galy was the keeper of the Builders the task of crossing out the names on the stone fell upon him. So I assume that in the three years that Gally has been in the Glade, he was the one crossing out the names of the dead. That includes both friends and coworkers. A job like this is likely to take a toll on the person doing it. For three years gally, has seen people break rules, get exiled, and die, and all the while as he saw it all he took a lesson to the heart. Don’t break the rules. The one time he did break the rules he ran into the maze and ended up stung by a griever and had to go through the changing. And ever since he has followed the rules to a T, and takes his job very seriously so when Thomas comes along and begins Breaking all the rules without consequences, he begins to fear the repercussions. And finally when the griever begin attacking, it was like all his worst fears were coming true. So in the end his behavior was the effect of three years of living in fear.

Answer:

Of Mice and Men is a novella written by John Steinbeck. Published in 1937, it narrates the experiences of George Milton and Lennie Small, two displaced migrant ranch workers, who move from place to place in California in search of new job opportunities during the Great Depression in the United States.

Answer:

Explanation:

John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men is a parable about what it means to be human. Steinbeck's story of George and Lennie's ambition of owning their own ranch, and the obstacles that stand in the way of that ambition, reveal the nature of dreams, dignity, loneliness, and sacrifice. Ultimately, Lennie, the mentally handicapped giant who makes George's dream of owning his own ranch worthwhile, ironically becomes the greatest obstacle to achieving that dream.

Of Mice and Men takes place during America's Great Depression, which lasted from the Stock Market Crash of October 1929 until 12 years later when World War II began. One result of the Depression was a lack of steady jobs, which resulted in an increase in the number of itinerant workers. For the most part, these itinerant workers were men who traveled from town to town seeking short-term employment.

Of Mice and Men is one of the only published novels written from an obscure point of view called the objective third-person. In contrast to the omniscient third-person perspective, from which the author, and thus the reader, can read the minds of all the characters, the objective point of view doesn't allow readers direct access to any of the characters' thoughts and feelings. We can deduce those thoughts and feelings only by means of what the characters do and say. Though unusual for a novel, this approach is typical of plays and film, which helps explain why Of Mice and Men was easily adapted for the Broadway stage and as a Hollywood movie.

The novel's title comes from a poem by the Scottish poet Robert Burns called "To a Mouse." Originally written in a Scottish dialect, the poem contains lines that translates as "The best-laid schemes Of Mice and Men often go awry." This is appropriate, in that Of Mice and Men contains Lenny and George's scheme that goes tragically awry — that is, off track.

If you were the princess in lady or the tiger, what option would you have indicated?

Answers

Answer:

The Princess’s Choice Frank R. Stockton, the author of The Lady or The Tiger, wrote the story and left us questioning who might have been behind the door. The story is puzzling and mysterious all together. The story gives many evidences and hints to the princess’s decision. Some would say that the lady came out from behind the door, but there are several evidence that show that the princess chose the door with the tiger. First of all, if the princess chose the lady, she would be in so much pain to see her lover and the lady together. Seeing the two together would constantly remind her of her decision, but choosing the tiger, it would be over quickly. The princess would feel guilty about sending her lover to his death, but as time goes on she will heal. She would not be constantly reminded of her decision because she is not going to see the young man around anymore, making her memories fade, and her guilt of the decision lessen.…show more content…

Being semi-barbaric the princess could watch the death of her lover and his death would not affect her as much as it affected others; she would be used to seeing blood and. Also, if she was like her father in the way of being fair and the fact that her lover is guilty of the crime, it would is more likely that the princess would choose the tiger. If her love was true, she would have already made up her mind. The time she took, making her decision shows that her love was not as strong or as true as we imagined it to be. Therefore, she would be more likely to choose the tiger because she was semi-barbaric like her
