A title or summary for a document or section of a document is called  Introduction.

What is Introduction?

An essay, article, or book's introduction, also known as a prolegomenon, is the opening section where the purpose and goals of the rest of the work are laid forth. Normally, the body and conclusion follow.

Through reading and study, the fundamental literary forms of fiction, poetry, and theater are introduced in this course. The course may include music, movies, miniseries on television, and other kinds of media in addition to creative nonfiction literature.

Writing a strong paper depends heavily on the introduction, which is the first paragraph or section of an essay. The essay's introduction allows the writer to entice readers, provide pertinent background information, and lay out the major subject, objective, and direction of the essay.

Thus, it is Introduction.

Why do you think pastoralism arose in the same time period as naturalism despite their different themes or approaches to literature? Do you think pastoralism was trying to recapture romanticism? Was there a need at the time for the type of literature that pastoralism created?

Answers

Answer:

Romantic ideals in the early to mid-nineteenth century were shattered by the Civil War. Americans grew disillusioned by the war. They didn't agree with the glorious depiction of war that romantic literature tried to capture, both during and after the war. This disillusionment led writers to take a different perspective in their literature. Literary movements such as realism, naturalism, and pastoralism were the result. While realism and naturalism embraced scientific principles, pastoralism attempted to recapture romanticism by portraying the simple life. During the post-Civil War period, some writers felt that there was a need to show that romantic literature, as a whole, was not forgotten. Pastoralism depicted the beauty of a simple life, in particular, that of a shepherd’s, in order to recapture romanticism. Plato

Explanation:

Answer:

In the early to mid19th century, the Civil War destroyed romantic hopes. They opposed to romantic literature's marvelous representation of combat. As a result, literary movements including realism, naturalism, and pastoralism arose. Some writers felt impelled in the post Civil War era to demonstrate that romantic literature in general had not faded out. Pastors presented the beauty of a modest living, particularly that of a shepherd, in an attempt to rekindle romance. This dissatisfaction has motivated writers to take a new approach to their work. The battle had left the American people disillusioned.

SHARKS' TEETH
Langston Carter

The day we found the sharks' teeth was foggy and cool. Moisture hung in the air so thick you could almost see it sparkling in the dim sunlight. There were days, early in the summer like this one, where it seemed there was more water in the air than in the bay. We had beached the boat and stepped out on the recently cleared spit of land. The ground had a light dusting of white sand over an under layer of dried black mud. It looked like a recently frosted chocolate cake, though the frosting was spread a bit thin for my taste. The ground was solid, but we knew from experience that it was full of fiddler crab holes, and would be underwater at the first super-high tide. Mysteriously, to us anyway, someone wanted to build a house there.

We often came to these spots to look for artifacts. Our beach, our summer home, had been a fishing camp for as long as anyone living could remember. The oldest stories told of travelers coming down to the edge of the sea, lining up to fill their wagon beds with salted fish to take back home. Old decaying cabins still lined the beach. Rotting nets, hung out to dry in the last century, decorated their weathered walls. Their broken faces spun stories in our minds. The fishermen who, tanned and wrinkled from sun and salt, hauled their nets full of splashing mullet in to cheers from the waiting crowds. The bounty of the sea lightened everyone's hearts, and the smell of roasting fish filled the damp air. Women fanned themselves from wagon seats. Children splashed in the shallow edges of the bay. It was a scene we had acted out as youngsters, building an imaginary bridge to a life we would never fully know.

Read this sentence from the text:

Old decaying cabins still lined the beach.

What is the main effect of the word decaying in this sentence?

It suggests a dislike of the cabins.
It suggests a fearful community.
It suggests a lack of life.
It suggests something horrible happened.

Answers

Answer:

C. It suggests a lack of life

Explanation:

First of all, the other answers don't make sense.

A) It does not suggest a dislike of cabins, decaying has nothing to do with that.

B) It does not suggest a fearful community, that is just illogical.

D) It does not suggest something horrible has occurred because that isn't supported in either paragraph.

Therefore, it is C. It suggests a lack of life. Decaying in this case means worn out and not lively. Even the next sentence supports this, "rotting nets, hung out to dry in the last century." The disregard of these things causes them to give off this aura of lacking life. Therefore, the best possible answer in this situation would be C.

On her way to talk to her aunt, Bernice overhears Aunt Josephine and Marjorie's conversation about her in which Marjorie insults and complains about Bernice. Marjorie, Warren, and the whole crowd watch as the barber chops off Bernice’s long hair, bobbing it in an ugly fashion. During breakfast, Bernice complains to Marjorie about her insults and insensitive behavior. On the verge of tears, she then bluffs about returning home. Answers

Answer:

This is the correct sequence of events:

1. While Bernice is in the women's dressing room fixing her hair, Otis Ormonde jokes with Warren and his friends about hitting her on the head with a club when she steps out.

2. On her way to talk to her aunt, Bernice overhears Aunt Josephine and Marjorie's conversation about her in which Marjorie insults and complains about Bernice.

3. During breakfast, Bernice complains to Marjorie about her insults and insensitive behavior. On the verge of tears, she then bluffs about returning home.

4. Marjorie, Warren, and the whole crowd watch as the barber chops off Bernice’s long hair, bobbing it in an ugly fashion.

5. Bernice enviously watches as Marjorie tosses her own blond hair in front of the mirror and begins to twist it into two long braids, looking like a delicate painting of some Saxon princess.

Explanation:

By F. Scott Fitzgerald, the short story "Bernice Bobs Her Hair" is set at a time when bobbed hair for women was still seen as immoral by most of society.

The main character is Bernice, whose antagonist is her own cousin, Marjorie. While Bernice is visiting, Marjorie is forced by her mother to take her cousin with her to the dances and parties she attends. However, while Marjorie is popular among boys and girls, Bernice is seen as boring and spoiled. During one of the dances, Otis Ormonde jokes with Warren and his friends about hitting her on the head with a club when she steps out.

Eventually, Marjorie grows tired of Bernice and complains to her mother about it. Bernice overhears their conversation, feels deeply offended, and the next morning tries to confront Marjorie about it during breakfast. The conflict between them rises until Bernice decides to ask her cousin for help in order to become more popular.

Marjorie does help Bernice but, at the same time, sets a trap for her. She teaches Bernice to go around saying she will get her hair bobbed, which is successful in attracting everyone's attention. However, when Warren begins to like Bernice, Marjorie gets jealous. She corners Bernice in such a way that she (Bernice) ends up agreeing to having her hair cut. They all watch it as her beautiful black hair is bobbed.

Marjorie decides to apologize, insincerely, of course. While doing so, she braids her own long blond hair into beautiful braids as Bernice watches, enviously.

In the end, Bernice cuts Marjorie's braid while her cousin is asleep as revenge for having been deceived.

Answer:

Criticizes the subject for having abundant knowledge of the world but low self-awareness- He was a mighty poet—and A subtle-souled Psychologist; All things he seemed to understand Of old or new—of sea or land— But his own mind—which was a mist. (excerpt from Peter Bell the Third by Percy Shelley)

Criticizes the subject for confusing his audience - But like a hawk encumber'd with his hood, Explaining Metaphysics to the nation-- I wish he would explain his Explanation. (excerpt from Don Juan by Lord Byron)

Criticizes the subject for his half baked knowledge - …he really promised something great, If not intelligible, without Greek Contrived to talk about the Gods of late, Much as they might have been supposed to speak. (excerpt from Don Juan by Lord Byron)

Explanation:

By the process of elimination, the correct quotes for each excerpt are given as follows-

Percy Shelley's "Peter Bell the Third" is a satirical take of William Wordsworth's poem "Peter Bell". In it, Shelley presents how a man endowed with great ideas are also susceptible to the dullness of life and knowledge. And by stating how "a mighty poet . . . seemed to understand [everything] but his own mind—which was a mist", he seems to criticize how the subject has low self-awareness despite having abundant knowledge of the world.

Lord Byron's "Don Juan" is a satirical poem about how a man is seduced by a woman and not the other way round. The theme of love and how it affects the young man centers the whole epic poem.

The quote "I wish he would explain his Explanation" is a critique of how the subject confuses his audience more than providing the right answers. Additionally, "he really promised something great, . . . without Greek contrived to talk about the Gods of late, . . . Much as they might have been supposed to speak" is also a critique of how the subject has just some level of knowledge, though not fully aware of the whole issue, more like having "half-baked" knowledge.
