(40 points book night)

Answers

Explanation:

In Elie Wiesel's memoir Night, the relationship between Elie and his father changes dramatically over the course of the story. At the beginning of the book, Elie is deeply connected to his father, relying on him for guidance and support during their imprisonment in the concentration camps. However, as the horrors of the Holocaust take their toll, the relationship between father and son begins to change, with Elie questioning his faith and his father's role in their suffering.

At the beginning of the book, Elie's relationship with his father is one of deep respect and admiration. Elie looks up to his father as a source of strength and wisdom, and the two share a close bond. However, as the harsh realities of life in the concentration camps become increasingly apparent, Elie's faith in his father is tested. He becomes frustrated with his father's weakness and inability to protect him from the brutality of the guards and the other prisoners.

As the story progresses, Elie's relationship with his father becomes more strained. Elie becomes increasingly disillusioned with God and the idea of divine intervention, questioning whether his father's faith in God is misplaced. He also becomes resentful of his father's inability to protect him, feeling that he is burdened with the responsibility of caring for his father instead of focusing on his own survival.

Despite these challenges, however, Elie's love for his father remains. He feels guilty for his anger and frustration towards his father, recognizing that his father is also suffering immensely and doing his best to survive. In the end, when his father dies in the concentration camp, Elie is consumed with grief and regret, feeling that he has failed to protect and care for his father as he should have.

Overall, Elie's relationship with his father is a complex one, marked by both love and frustration. While he deeply respects his father at the beginning of the story, his experiences in the concentration camps cause him to question his faith and his father's role in their suffering. Despite these challenges, however, his love for his father ultimately prevails, leading to a heartbreaking loss when his father passes away.

Be sure to include examples from the text that support your evaluation.

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif. — Water spilled out of a spigot, sparklingly clear, into a plastic cup. Just 45

minutes earlier, it was effluent, piped over from Orange County’s wastewater treatment plant next door. At

a specialized plant, it then went through several stages of purification that left it cleaner than anything that

flows out of a home faucet or comes in a brand-name bottle.

“It’s stripped down to the H, 2 and O,” said Mike Markus, the general manager of the county water district.

He was not exaggerating. Without the minerals that give most cities’ supply a distinctive flavor, this water

tastes of nothing.

As California scrambles for ways to cope with its crippling drought and the mandatory water restrictions

imposed last month by Gov. Jerry Brown, an array of ideas that were long dismissed as too controversial,

expensive or unpleasant are getting a second look. One is to conserve more water; another is to turn

nearby and abundant sources of water, like the Pacific Ocean, into drinking water through desalination.

Yet another is to recycle the water Californians have already used. And therein lies a marketing challenge

that can be even greater than the technological one.

Water recycling is common for uses like irrigation; purple pipes in many California towns deliver water to

golf courses, zoos and farms. The West Basin Municipal Water District, which serves 17 cities in

southwestern Los Angeles County, produces five types of “designer” water for such uses as irrigation and

in cooling towers and boilers. At a more grass-roots level, activists encourage Californians to save “gray

water” from bathroom sinks, showers, tubs and washing machines to water their plants and gardens.

Enticing people to drink recycled water, however, requires getting past what experts call the “yuck” factor.

Efforts in the 1990s to develop water reuse in San Diego and Los Angeles were beaten back by activists

who denounced what they called, devastatingly, “toilet to tap.” Los Angeles built a $55 million purification

plant in the 1990s, but never used it to produce drinking water; the water goes to irrigation instead.

But with the special purification plant, which has been operating since 2008, Orange County swung

people to the idea of drinking recycled water. The county does not run its purified water directly into

drinking water treatment plants; instead, it sends the water underground to replenish the area’s aquifers

and to be diluted by the natural water supply. This environmental buffer seems to provide an emotional

buffer for consumers as well.

The $481 million plant opened during a previous drought. “It made us look like geniuses,” Mr. Markus

said. The timing is right again. In the midst of the current drought, the county has completed a $142

million expansion that will increase capacity by more than 40 percent, to 100 million gallons a day, and at

a fraction of the cost of importing water or desalinating seawater. (A further expansion to 130 million

gallons a day is planned.)

Now water reuse is being tried elsewhere around the country, including parched cities in Texas that do

pipe treated water directly to their water supplies. Here in California, “there are agencies considering this

all over the state,” said Jennifer West, the general manager for WateReuse California, a trade

association.

Answers

Answer:

Explanation:

The writer presents a compelling argument in favor of recycled wastewater as a solution to California's water crisis, arguing that it is a cost-effective and environmentally friendly way to increase the state's water supply. The writer acknowledges that recycling wastewater for drinking purposes can be a hard sell due to the "yuck" factor, but points to the success of Orange County's specialized purification plant, which has been in operation since 2008 and has increased the area's water supply without significant opposition from the public. The writer provides evidence of the plant's success and expansion, as well as other examples of water reuse being tried elsewhere in the country. Overall, the writer makes a strong case for recycled wastewater as a viable option for addressing California's water shortage.

Description of the most important scene and why it is important to Eleanor and Park? Why is this scene so integral to the story? Explain. What would be missing from the story if this scene wasn't there?

Answers

The scene where Eleanor and Park hold hands for the first time is arguably the most important scene in the novel. This scene takes place on the school bus as they are sitting together, and they eventually hold hands without saying a word.

This scene is so integral to the story because it marks the beginning of Eleanor and Park's relationship and sets the tone for their entire romance. Up until this point, the two characters have been wary of each other and have only shared a few conversations. However, in this moment, they both take a risk and show vulnerability by reaching out to each other. This act of physical touch is significant because it shows that they are willing to take a chance on each other and trust each other, despite their fears and insecurities.

Without this scene, the novel would lose a lot of its emotional impact and the reader would not be as invested in Eleanor and Park's relationship. This scene establishes a crucial turning point in their relationship, and it is the catalyst for the rest of the story. If this scene wasn't there, the reader would not have the same emotional connection to the characters and the story would not be as impactful.

Overall, this scene is a powerful moment that captures the essence of Eleanor and Park's relationship. It is a turning point that allows the characters to begin to trust each other and build a connection that will shape the rest of the story.

~ Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow:

We have been brought up to fear insects. We regard them as unnecessary creatures that do more harm than good. Man continuously wages war on them, for they contaminate his food, carry diseases or devour his crops. They sting or bite without provocation, they fly uninvited into our rooms on summer nights, or beat against our lighted windows. We live in dread not only of unpleasant insects like spiders or wasps, but of quite harmless ones like moths. Reading about them increases our understanding without dispelling our fears. Knowing that the industrious ants live in a highly organized society does not prevent us from being filled with revulsion when we find hordes of them crawling over a carefully prepared picnic lunch. No matter how much we like honey, or how much we have read of the uncanny sense of direction which bees possess, we have a horror of being stung. Most of our fears are unreasonable, but they are difficult to erase. At the same time, however, insects are strangely fascinating. We enjoy reading about them, especially when we find that like the Praying Mantis, they lead perfectly horrible lives. We enjoy staring at them, entrance as they go about their business, unaware -we hope - of our presence. Who has not stood in awe at the sight of a spider pouncing on a fly or a column of ants triumphantly carrying home an enormous dead beetle? Last summer, I spent many days in the garden watching thousands of ants crawling up the trunk of my prized peach tree. The tree has grown against a warm wall on a sheltered side of the house. I am especially proud of it, not only because it has survived several severe winters, but because it occasionally produces luscious peaches. During the summer I noticed that the leaves of the tree had begun to wither. Clusters of tiny insects called Aphids were to be found on the underside of the leaves. They were visited by a large column of ants which obtained a sort of honey from them. I immediately embarked on an experiment which, even though it failed to get rid of the ants, kept me fascinated for twenty four hours. I bound the base of the tree with sticky tape, making it impossible for the ants to reach the Aphids. The tape was so sticky that they did not dare to cross it. For a long time, I watched them scurrying around the base of the tree in bewilderment. I even went out at midnight with a torch and noted with satisfaction and surprise that the ants were still swarming around the sticky tape without being able to do anything about it. I got up early next morning to find the ants were climbing up the wall of the house and then on to the leaves of the tree. I realized sadly that I had been completely defeated by their ingenuity. The ants had been quick to find an answer to my thoroughly unscientific methods.

1. What is our attitude towards insects? 2. Why does man try to exterminate insects?
3. Why does the writer say that knowing about insects does not make man change his attitude towards insects? 4. What was the reason that the leaves of the tree were beginning to wither in summer?

ARGUMENTATIVE: What is the article’s implied thesis about Leon Bridges and his music, and how well is this idea supported through relevant details and evidence? Write an argumentative essay that evaluates the article’s effectiveness according to these criteria. Provide specific textual evidence to support your points.

The story is Leon Bridges on Overcoming Childhood Isolation and Finding His Voice: ‘You Can't Teach Soul’

Answers

Explanation:

The article, "Leon Bridges on Overcoming Childhood Isolation and Finding His Voice: ‘You Can't Teach Soul’", discusses the life and music of Leon Bridges, a young artist who has achieved critical and commercial success with his soulful and introspective songs. The article's implied thesis is that Bridges' music is an authentic expression of his personal experiences and struggles, and that this authenticity is a key factor in his popularity and critical acclaim.

The article supports this idea through a number of relevant details and evidence. For example, it discusses Bridges' childhood growing up in a small town in Texas, where he often felt isolated and disconnected from the world around him. The article notes that Bridges used music as a way to cope with this isolation, and that his early influences included old soul and R&B records that he discovered while working as a dishwasher.

The article also discusses Bridges' songwriting process, noting that he often draws inspiration from his own life experiences and struggles. For example, the article describes how Bridges wrote the song "River" as a way to process his grief over the loss of his mother, who died when he was only 23 years old. The article quotes Bridges as saying, "I knew that I had to create something that would help me get through it. And that's what 'River' was for me."

Overall, the article effectively supports its thesis about Leon Bridges and his music through a combination of personal anecdotes, interviews with Bridges, and analysis of his music and lyrics. The article makes a compelling case that Bridges' authenticity and personal connection to his music is a key factor in his success, and that this authenticity resonates with audiences who are hungry for genuine emotional expression in an age of slick production and manufactured pop stars.

However, one potential weakness of the article is that it focuses almost exclusively on Bridges' personal experiences and struggles, without delving deeply into the larger cultural and historical context of soul and R&B music. While the article acknowledges that Bridges is part of a larger tradition of African American music, it could benefit from a deeper analysis of the ways in which Bridges' music both draws on and innovates within this tradition. Despite this potential limitation, the article is overall a persuasive and engaging argument in support of the idea that Bridges' music is an authentic expression of his personal experiences and struggles.

Philosophy: The Hellenistic era was a time of great intellectual development, and philosophy was at the forefront of this movement. Some of the most influential philosophers of all time lived during this era, including Aristotle, Epicurus, and Zeno of Citium.

These philosophers developed new ideas about ethics, politics, and the nature of reality that continue to influence modern thought. Art and Architecture: The Hellenistic era was also a time of great artistic and architectural achievement. The period saw the development of new styles and techniques, such as the use of realistic portraiture and the creation of large-scale public buildings like the Library of Alexandria. The Hellenistic era also produced some of the greatest works of art in human history, including the Venus de Milo and the Winged Victory of Samothrace. While not as important as philosophy, I believe that art and architecture are still significant cultural achievements of the Hellenistic era.

Science and Technology: Finally, the Hellenistic era was a time of significant scientific and technological advancement. Scholars and inventors during this era made important contributions to fields like astronomy, mathematics, and medicine.

Tax progressivity is as income rises, whether the proportion of ___________________ to _______________ increases, decreases or stays the same.

Answers

Tax systems in the U.S. fall into three main categories: Regressive, proportional, and progressive. Regressive and progressive taxes impact high- and low-income earners differently, whereas proportional taxes do not. Property taxes are an example of a regressive tax; the U.S. federal income tax is a progressive tax example; and occupational taxes are a type of proportional tax.

Regressive taxes have a greater impact on lower-income individuals than on the wealthy. Proportional tax, also referred to as a flat tax, affects low-, middle-, and high-income earners relatively equally. They all pay the same tax rate, regardless of income.

A progressive tax has more of a financial impact on higher-income individuals than on low-income earners, with tax rate, and tax liability, increasing, in line with a taxpayer's income. Investment income and estate taxes are examples of progressive taxes in the U.S.

Respond to questions using the viewpoints of Mark Twain's The Lowest Animal.
1. What is your first response to Twain’s essay?

2. What is Twain’s purpose in this essay? What is his point of view or perspective—that is, what does he want you to think about humanity?

3. What are the targets of Twain’s satire, and where does he use exaggeration and irony to hit his targets? Does his satire work, or does he overdo it?

Answers

Twain's purpose in "The Lowest Animal" is to criticize humanity and challenge the idea that humans are the superior species.

His point of view is that humans are actually the lowest and most despicable animals on earth, because they exhibit behaviors that are not seen in other animals, such as greed, cruelty, and the desire to wage war.

He wants his readers to think critically about their own behavior and the behavior of other humans, and to consider whether the qualities that they consider to be uniquely human are actually something to be proud of.

The targets of Twain's satire are primarily humans and their behavior. He uses exaggeration and irony to show how humans behave in ways that are not seen in other animals, such as fighting wars, exploiting other animals for profit, and engaging in activities purely for the sake of pleasure. Twain's satire is effective because it highlights the hypocrisy and absurdity of human behavior, and challenges readers to consider whether these behaviors are truly civilized or not. However, some readers may find Twain's satire to be too extreme or over the top, and may not agree with his view of humanity as the lowest animal.
