He knocked on the door and when no one came to the door he knocked louder and louder until Carter’s mom came to the door. Jackson said, “Is Carter there I need to talk to him.” Carter’s mom nodded her head and pointed to Carter’s room. Before Jackson went into his room he knocked and said: “Can I come in?” Carter said “Sure.” Jackson sat down on his bed and he put his chin in his hands and said: “I have done something so terrible and I need help.”

Carter then said, “Hey I’m here if you ever need me.” Jackson said “Yeah I know. That’s why I always come to you.” They smiled at each other and Carter then said: “But I really need to know what you did so horribly wrong.” Jackson looked up and said “Ok but you have to promise not to tell anyone.” Carter said, “Ok I promise.” Jackson then told him the story about what had happened during the day and when Jackson got done telling the story Carter was spellbound and said, “Dude, what are you going to do?” Jackson replied with a sigh and said, “I don’t know what to do. Explain the Ministry of Truth's slogans, "War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is
strength.” in your own words.
What do these slogans reveal about the society and the environment of 1984?
help please

Answers

Answer:

War is Peace. Freedom is Slavery. Ignorance is Strength. — George Orwell, 1984. These slogans were created by an entity known only as “The Party,” which consist of those in charge of the country.

The first slogan is probably the most contradictory of the three. The people of Oceania believe that the saying War is Peace means that in order to have peace one must tolerate the horrors of war. It does not equate the two as the statement might otherwise suggest. The people fully believe that war is bad and peace is good.

Yet, as in real life, the people have come to the understanding that sometimes one must make terrible sacrifices in order to have a peaceful nation. The war does not take place on the soil of Oceania but instead, somewhere far from it so they don’t see the horrors of the battle, the destruction, the wounded and dead in front of them. They only hear about it through the daily announcements made by the Party.

While this contradiction may seem like a logical reality at first, it becomes less so when the reader realizes that there is actually no war occurring at all. It is a made up fiction created by the Party just to keep the people in line. It is intended to keep their attention focused elsewhere, so that they do not realize how the Party is controlling their every thought and action.

The motto War is Peace indicates how having a shared enemy unites the people of Oceania and helps them remain on a common course. It gives them something to worry about external to the way the country is being run, that is happening somewhere else. It helps to prevent them from becoming consciously aware of the obvious problems in their own society. This mentality, put in place for the benefit of the Party, gives the people someone other than the government to blame for their problems, making them easier to rule.

A state of constant war demonstrates that people are sacrificing for the greater good of the society, pledging their effort and money to the war, and devoting themselves to their country and government. From the Party's point of view, all of this is good in that the more people that invest in and commit to their nation and government, the fewer problems they will perceive.

This saying focuses the people's attention, preventing them from being consciously aware of the obvious problems in their own society, where they are being actively manipulated and controlled. If people find themselves having thoughts counter to accepted government rhetoric, they can quickly distract themselves by thinking about the war and worrying over the possibility of attack.

100 Points. Reflect and Respond From the poems you’ve read so far, think of at least two examples for which the poets used personification. Of the poems you’ve read so far, which one did you like most and why? Before you read the following analysis, complete the following steps on your own: (1) Determine what kind of poem it is. (2) Identify the speaker and the person being spoken to.

poem 1.
I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud
I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o’er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced, but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:
A poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company:
I gazed—and gazed—but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:

For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.

poem 2.
Trees
I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.

A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the earth’s sweet flowing breast;

A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;

A tree that may in Summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;

Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.

Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.

poem 3.
Not that the pines were darker there,
nor mid-May dogwood brighter there,
nor swifts more swift in summer air;
it was my own country,

having its thunderclap of spring,
its long midsummer ripening,
its corn hoar-stiff at harvesting,
almost like any country,

yet being mine; its face, its speech,
its hills bent low within my reach,
its river birch and upland beech
were mine, of my own country.

Now the dark waters at the bow
fold back, like earth against the plow;
foam brightens like the dogwood now
at home, in my own country.

poem 4.
Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer’s Day?
Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate:
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer’s lease hath all too short a date;
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimm’d;
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance or nature’s changing course untrimm’d:
But thy eternal summer shall not fade
Nor lose possession of that fair thou owest;
Nor shall Death brag thou wand‘rest in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou growest’

So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,

So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

Answer:

That floats on high o'er vales and Hills, The speaker describes how he walked around and felt as lonely as a cloud. ... Well, maybe the ones that float about valleys ("vales") and hills are lonely. It's more likely, the speaker is projecting his own loneliness on the clouds.

The two examples where the poets made use of personification are:

That floats on high o’er vales and hills,The hills are lonely

Personification is the use of human attributes to refer to inanimate objects and this is a literary technique that is commonly used.

For example, when a writer says something like, "The sun smiled at us today", or "The rain fell angirly", we can see that the sun and rain are both inanimate objects and as such, they cannot show human characteristics such as smiling and being angry.

The statement that is true about the narrator's different perspective can be difficult and confusing when you do not know why you need to do certain things. The correct option is c.

Who is a narrator?

A narrator is the one who tells a story. In a work of fiction the narrator determines the story’s point of view. If the narrator is a full participant in the story’s action, the narrative is said to be in the first person. A story told by a narrator who is not a character in the story is a third-person narrative.

A work may have more than one narrator, as in an epistolary novel such as Samuel Richardson’s Clarissa, which consists of letters by a variety of characters. In Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights, one character tells part of the story and then introduces another who continues it or provides another perspective on events. Narrators are sometimes categorized by the way in which they present their story.

An intrusive narrator, a common device in many 18th- and 19th-century works, is one who interrupts the story to provide a commentary to the reader on some aspect of the story or on a more general topic.

Read the text The History of Ice Cream:

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream! Who doesn't love a nice, cold scoop of ice cream on a warm day? For thousands of years, ice cream has been a decadent dessert loved by most people around the world.

There is some argument about who first invented ice cream. Some believe that ice cream was invented by the Chinese people anywhere from 2,000 to 6,000 years ago. They created a recipe of frozen milk and rice that was served as a dessert. Persia has also been credited with first serving frozen desserts. Over 2,000 years ago, the wealthy people of Persia enjoyed shaved ice from the mountains, covered with grape juice. They later learned to freeze rosewater and add different fruit toppings. These desserts were considered delicacies that only the richest families could experience. About 1,000 years after this, there is evidence that suggested Nero, the Roman Emperor, also enjoyed frozen treats and demanded that a constant supply of ice from the mountains be available to him. He liked to add honey to the top of his dessert.

Ice cream as we know it can be traced back to the 9th century in Arab cities, such as Baghdad, Damascus, and Cairo. Near the end of the 13th century, Marco Polo returned to Italy after his travels through China with news of a frozen creamed dessert. In Europe, ice cream could only be found in Italy. Then, in 1533, Italian noblewoman Catherine de'Medici of Italy married Henry II of France. As Queen, Catherine introduced ice cream to France. Soon, the popularity of the dessert spread across all of Europe.

Why is there an argument about who really invented ice cream?

a: Ice cream wasn't created until the ice cream cone was invented.
b: Many people around the world disagreed about which flavor of ice cream would be recognized as the first.
c: Only wealthy people were given credit for inventing ice cream.
d:There were many people from different places experimenting with frozen desserts around the same time.
