How Tea Came to Be

The brewing and drinking of tea is believed to have originated from Chinese culture. One story tells how tea was discovered accidentally by a Chinese emperor in 2737 B.C. The emperor did not want to get sick, so he always insisted on boiling his drinking water to be assured of its purity. One day, some tea leaves from his garden accidentally fell into his hot water. The emperor noticed the pleasant aroma. He tasted the new beverage and found it delicious and refreshing.
The habit and custom of drinking tea eventually spread all over the world. Dutch and Portuguese sailors brought tea to Europe in the seventeenth century. At the time, tea was very expensive. Only the rich could afford it. In Britain and Holland, tea was sold at auctions where it was popular among aristocrats. In Europe, drinking tea became symbolic of the upper class.
At the beginning of the eighteenth century, the popularity of tea began to reach further than just the wealthy. Prices came down and tea became a commodity available to all segments of the population. The buying and selling of tea between the East and the West turned into a booming industry. Companies specializing in tea were formed and grew into powerful businesses that brought in huge revenues. Because tea brought in so much money and became so powerful, it was even used in political maneuvers. In the mid-1800s, when Britain and China were at war, China set an embargo on the exporting of tea to Britain. This stopped the flow of Chinese tea coming into the Britain and made it more difficult for the British to buy.
Tea today remains an enormous industry worldwide. What seemed like a trivial event in the emperor's garden centuries ago has now become a global multibillion-dollar business. Over 2.5 million tons of tea are grown and produced around the world each year.

Alarmed by car accidents involving teenagers, a number of states are considering raising the age for getting a license.

(2) The car spun out of control and struck several objects, including a giant light pole. (3) Two of the boys—a 16-year-old and a 17-year-old—were killed. (4) The driver of the car was just 16.

(5) The answer is raising the driving age. (6) That's why I introduced legislation to raise the driving age in Illinois from 16 to 18. (7) I realize this idea is controversial, so I could not stand by and watch one more young person die because he or she was not quite ready to be behind the wheel.

(8) All 50 states prohibit 16-year-olds from drinking alcohol, buying cigarettes, and purchasing handguns. (9) Yet somehow most states are willing to put them in charge of a car, which could potentially be a deadly weapon.

(28) Except raising the driving age won't save lives. (29) Studies show that it is inexperience, not age, that causes accidents. (30) Raising the driving age will just create inexperienced, accident-prone drivers at 18 instead of 16.

(31) Teens need the ability to drive just as much as anyone else—to get to school, to get to work, to get to sports or band practice, or just to go out with their friends. (32) Cars are necessary for mobility in this country. (33) Taking that away is a large disruption to the lives of teen-agers—for no good reason.

There is a sharp contrast between the funeral speeches of Brutus and Antony in Julius Caesar. Antony's funeral oration differs from Brutus's in many ways. Brutus's speech to the crowd of people is the speech of a philosopher while Antony's speech is emotional and is intended to stir the feelings and passions of the listeners. Brutus's speech is cold, logical, and intellectual; while Antony's speech is charged with feeling, and it is meant to excite the emotions of the listeners. Brutus's speech appeals to the intelligence of the listeners, and it fails because the listeners in this case are not intelligent enough.


Brutus's speech is really an excellent specimen of reasoning. The logic behind the arguments in this speech is perfectly clear. But logic is something which the common people do not understand. This does not mean that Brutus is speaking to people who are utterly ignorant. The point is that the people understand Brutus's reasoning only to a limited extent. As for the logic in his speech, here is an example: "Not that I loved Caesar less, but that I loved Rome more". This sentence is a simple enough and yet not so simple. There is certainly an element of complexity in this sentence. Brutus tries to appeal to people's love of freedom. He tries to stir their hatred of tyranny. But the does not realize that the people are not very enlightened and that that they do not really understand this talk about freedom and slavery. In the starting scene, this mob has already been depicted as admirers of Caesar, the conqueror. A love of freedom is far from their thoughts. And yet they accepts Brutus's reasoning. But the crowd's ignorance comes out in their declaring that Brutus should be given the title of Caesar. It is clear that the crowd does not understand the principles for the sake of which Brutus had murdered a dear friend.

On the other hand, Antony knows the psychology of the mob. He appeals directly to this psychology. He does not talk of the principal of freedom. He does not talk of evil of tyranny and slavery. He speaks about the wounds which had been inflicted upon Caesar's body. He speaks about the ingratitude of Brutus who was loved as a dear friend by Caesar. He speaks about Caesar's will by the terms of which Caesar had left much of his property to the people in general. Antony makes use of several rhetorical devices in the course of his speech. He makes use of irony when he says again and again that Brutus is an honourable man.

However, we find another important difference in this respect. Brutus speaks to the mob in prose, while Antony speaks in verse. Poetry is always more effective than prose. It is also always more emotional than prose. Antony's speech makes use not only of rhetorical devices but also of poetic devices. Antony's speech is an excellent combination of art, cunning, and sincerity. Besides, Brutus speaks about abstract notions while Antony speaks in concrete terms. Brutus speaks of freedom and slavery, while Antony speaks of his listeners feelings and passions.
