What real-world technologies have had unexpected effects on people’s privacy?

Answers

Answer 1

Technology thus does not only influence privacy by changing the accessibility of information, but also by changing the privacy norms themselves. For example, social networking sites invite users to share more information than they otherwise might. This “oversharing” becomes accepted practice within certain groups.

You will construct a three-paragraph historical narrative essay where you will choose to write from either (1) Harriet Tubman (2) Frederick Douglass or (3) one of escaped fugitives. Use at least three facts you know about your character and the fascinating event they found themselves in. As you are having fun with this, you can make up conversations they had, food they ate, ideas or feelings they experience, plans or dreams, and so on. Be sure to address all of the story elements within your narrative such as the exposition, rising action, climax, falling action and resolution. Additionally, your narrative must reflect a theme that you will clearly state on your “Story Map Graphic Organizer.” Remember the theme for Unit 1 is perseverance so your narrative must reflect a similar theme. Follow the following steps to complete this project: Step 1: Decide from whose point of view(perspective) you will write your narrative from (Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass or one of the eleven escaped fugitives. Step 2: Begin prewriting by completing the Story Map and Setting the Conflict Worksheet (This helps you organize your thoughts. Step 3: Compose the historical narrative and include the following: 1. Dialogue (conversation between two or more people) a. Example: “Dad, why do we have to move to the back of the bus?” “Hush now boy and do what I asked,” Dad answered me in a startling voice. 2. Sensory details a. Example: Smells like clean, sweet air. b. You could smell the tension in the air. **Include strong feelings and emotions of the character**

Enciso had been at a loss as to where to go, and Balboa convinced him to try Darien to the north. Once established there, Enciso had shown himself to be a weak man. How could Balboa not act? Enciso did not understand the Indians as Balboa did. He could see that the Indians were battle-hardened warriors. The Spaniards had not been there long enough to call these armies into existence. Balboa's strength had been to recognize this discord. He divided the great tribes, supported one against the other. His reputation spread. His muskets blasted away the faces of the greatest warriors. Balboa's soldiers spread smallpox and syphilis. His Spanish war dogs, great mastiffs and wolf hounds, tore children limb from limb. The blood from his great war machine made the rivers flow red and his name, Balboa, moved quickly, apace with these rivers of blood.

Discord - (noun) disagreement or conflict
Balboa realizes that, on the battlefield, the Spaniards would be no match for the Indians.

Summer Program

“It’s a perfect beach day,” I thought on my way home from school. Good beach days were common in southern Florida, but every once in a while there was a day that made a trip to the beach a must. Little did I know, this particular day at the beach would change my summer and my life forever.

The beach was crowded with the usual groups of regulars and tourists. Off in the distance, though, I noticed a large gathering of people. Just then, Roger, a friend of my family and a police officer, came over.

I pointed to the crowd. “What’s up with them?”

“They’re looking at the sea turtle nests,” said Roger. “We posted signs last summer listing some rules for the area. Though the signs might not be enough. Just the other day we found a nest that had been disturbed—probably by onlookers. The director at the conservancy doesn’t think any hatchlings will make it out of that nest.”

“That’s awful,” I said.

“It’s actually been problem for a long time. They need all the help they can get to protect the turtles. You know, I think the Sea Turtle Conservancy has an internship program…”

Roger didn’t have to say another word. The next day, I asked my mom for permission. A week after that, I was hired as an intern; I would start working at the conservancy on the first day of summer vacation.

In my first days at the conservancy, I learned a lot about sea turtles, like their amazing instincts and adaptation—that a green sea turtle could hold its breath for as long as five hours, and could slow its heart rate to 10 beats per minute to conserve oxygen.

But I also learned that they were vulnerable. It was not only the tourists on the beaches that were threatening the survival of the sea turtles. The turtles were getting caught in the nets dropped by fishing boats. Another major threat was the bright lights of the waterfront. I learned that when baby sea turtles hatch, they are naturally attracted to the light of the horizon. Since the area near the beach had become built up over the years, the lights of hotels and restaurants sometimes caused the hatchlings to move in the wrong direction. Unable to find the ocean and the food they needed to stay alive, they would die on the beach.

That summer, I worked with willing fisherman to track migration patterns. This helped us develop better conservation plans. I also worked to alert businesses on the waterfront of the dangers that their bright lights posed to the hatchlings. I even worked with other interns to erect a wooden fence around the nesting site to keep visitors at a safe distance.

I had no idea that one day and one moment would lead me to learn so much; I also never thought that I could make a difference. But, with a little knowledge and a lot of work, we were able to do just that and ensure that the sea turtle hatchlings would be safe for generations to come.

Why does the narrator most likely choose to write about this experience?
A)to describe how a person’s mistakes can provide lessons for the future
B) to warn readers about how fishing impacts the ocean environment
C) to explain how a chance encounter can change a person’s life
D) to persuade other young people to volunteer in their communities

It was just an ordinary Friday morning, August 4, 1944. First thing in the morning, I'd gone into the hiding place to get the shopping list. Lonely after the long night locked in together, my friends were hungry for a good visit. Anne, as usual, had many questions to ask and urged me to talk a little. I promised that I'd come back and sit and we could have a real talk in the afternoon when I returned with the groceries. But conversation would have to wait until then. I went back to the office and got started with my work.

How is Miep’s perspective different than Anne’s?

Miep has the freedoms and duties of outside life.
Miep does not have any questions about the war.
Miep enjoys one-on-one conversations with friends.
Miep prefers the rigors of work to socializing.
