My Dear Sir:
You ask me to put in writing the substance of what I verbally stated the other day, in your presence, to Governor Bramlette and Senator Dixon. It was about as follows:
I am naturally anti-slavery. If slavery is not wrong nothing is wrong. I cannot remember when I did not so think and feel; and yet I have never understood that the Presidency conferred upon me an unrestricted right to act officially in this judgment and feeling. It was in the oath I took that I would to the best of my ability preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. I could not take the office without taking the oath. Nor was it in my view that I might take the oath to get power, and break the oath in using the power.
I understood, too, that in ordinary civil administration this oath even forbade me to practically indulge my primary abstract judgment on the moral question of slavery. I had publicly declared this many times and in many ways; and I aver that, to this day I have done no official act in mere deference to my abstract judgment and feeling on slavery. I did understand, however, that my oath to preserve the Constitution to the best of my ability imposed upon me the duty of preserving, by every indispensable means, that government, that nation, of which that Constitution was the organic law. Was it possible to lose the nation, and yet preserve the Constitution?
By general law, life and limb must be protected; yet often a limb must be amputated to save a life, but a life is never wisely given to save a limb. I felt that measures, otherwise unconstitutional, might become lawful by becoming indispensable to the preservation of the Constitution through the preservation of the nation. Right or wrong, I assumed this ground, and now avow it. I could not feel that to the best of my ability I had even tried to preserve the Constitution, if, to save slavery, or any minor matter, I should permit the wreck of government, country, and Constitution altogether.
When, early in the war, General Fremont attempted military emancipation, I forbade it, because I did not then think it an indispensable necessity. When, a little later, General Cameron, then Secretary of War, suggested the arming of the blacks, I objected, because I did not yet think it an indispensable necessity. When, still later, General Hunter attempted military emancipation, I forbade it, because I did not yet think the indispensable necessity had come. When, in March and May and July, 1862, I made earnest and successive appeals to the Border States to favor compensated emancipation, I believed the indispensable necessity for military emancipation and arming the blacks would come, unless averted by that measure. They declined the proposition; and I was, in my best judgment, driven to the alternative of either surrendering the Union, and with it the Constitution, or of laying strong hand upon the colored element. I chose the latter. In choosing it, I hoped for greater gain than loss; but of this I was not entirely confident...

Yours truly,

A. Lincoln

When Lincoln asks if it is possible to lose the nation, and yet preserve the Constitution . . . what is he referring to?
Answers
The certainty that abiding by the law would do nothing to stop the war
The certainty that abolishing slavery would bring the war to a peaceful end
The possibility of abiding by the law while destroying the nation through war
The possibility of abolishing slavery yet continuing to fight an unjust war

Answers

Answer 1

He is referring to the prospect of upholding the law while waging war and destroying the country.

Why Lincoln is so famous?

Lincoln's historical achievements—including his effective leadership of a political rebellion and civil war that preserved the Union, ended slavery, and allowed African-Americans to experience civil and social freedom—are the foundation of his legacy.

Why Lincoln was assassinated?

There were those Southern loyalists who thought the Confederacy might be revived as the war came to an end with the collapse of Richmond on April 3, 1865, and Lee's surrender at Appomattox on April 9. It was the conviction that drove John Wilkes Booth's plan to assassinate President Abraham Lincoln.

His only concern is maintaining the status quo in society and politics, he informs Antigone. Antigone makes the decision not to fit in with society. She instead adheres to her religious principles. In grammar, a subject is a noun, pronoun, or noun phrase that performs the action of the verb in a sentence or is the focus of the sentence. The subject typically comes before the verb in a sentence and answers the question "who" or "what" is performing the action. For example, in the sentence "The dog chased the cat," "dog" is the subject because it is performing the action of chasing.

How does the concept of terminal velocity help the reader understand the central idea that passage “The Physics of Skydiving” and “The Experience of a Lifetime”share? Use details from BOTH passages to support your answer

The concept of terminal velocity is central to understanding the passages "The Physics of Skydiving" and "The Experience of a Lifetime" because it explains the maximum speed a skydiver can reach as they fall through the air.

In "The Physics of Skydiving," the concept of terminal velocity is used to explain the factors that affect a skydiver's speed as they fall. The article describes how a skydiver initially accelerates due to the force of gravity, but eventually reaches terminal velocity once the force of air resistance matches the force of gravity. The article also explains how factors such as the skydiver's weight and body position can affect their terminal velocity.

In "The Experience of a Lifetime," the concept of terminal velocity is used to describe the sensation of falling during a skydive. Two of Georgia's most important industries are the agricultural industry and the film industry. Write an argument stating which of the two industries you think will be the most important one for modern Georgia. Be sure to: Introduce your claim.Support your claim with reasons and evidence from BOTH passages.Acknowledge and counter alternate or opposing claims.Use words, phrases, and clauses to create cohesion and clarify relationships among claim, counterclaims, reasons, and evidence.Provide a concluding statement or section that follows from and supports the argument. Modern Georgia has seen a shift to fewer but much larger farms. This is an important contribution to Georgia’s strong financial base.

Answers

A possible argument is: Georgia is a state with a rich and diverse economy, but two of its most important industries are the agricultural industry and the film industry.

Both of these sectors have contributed to the state's growth and development, but I believe that the agricultural industry will be the most important one for modern Georgia. The agricultural industry provides food security, environmental benefits, and economic opportunities for the state, while the film industry faces more challenges and uncertainties.

One reason why the agricultural industry is more important than the film industry is that it provides food security for Georgia and beyond. Georgia is one of the top producers of crops such as peanuts, pecans, peaches, cotton, and poultry in the nation. These products are essential for feeding not only Georgians but also millions of Americans and people around the world. According to passage 1, Georgia's agricultural exports totaled $4.2 billion in 2018, making it the ninth-largest exporter of agricultural products in the country. The passage also states that Georgia's agricultural industry supports more than 400,000 jobs and contributes $76 billion to the state's economy annually. These numbers show that the agricultural industry is vital for Georgia's food supply and income.

Another reason why the agricultural industry is more important than the film industry is that it provides environmental benefits for Georgia. The passage 1 mentions that Georgia's farmers are adopting more sustainable practices such as conservation tillage, cover crops, and precision agriculture. These practices help reduce soil erosion, water pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and pesticide use. The passage also mentions that Georgia's farmers are participating in programs such as the Environmental Quality Incentives Program and the Conservation Stewardship Program, which provide financial and technical assistance for implementing conservation practices. These programs help protect Georgia's natural resources and biodiversity.
