In the late 1800s, free and unlimited coinage of silver was supported by farmers primarily because they hoped this policy would do what?
Raise farm prices and make loan repayments easier.

Answers

Answer 1

Free and unlimited coinage of silver was supported by farmers in the late 1800s as they believed it would increase the demand for silver and "raise farm prices, making loan repayments easier".

During the late 1800s, farmers in the United States were facing economic hardships due to falling crop prices and high debt. They believed that the free and unlimited coinage of silver would increase the money supply, leading to inflation and higher prices for agricultural goods. This would allow farmers to pay off their debts more easily and improve their overall economic situation.

Additionally, silver mining was a major industry in the western United States, and the free coinage of silver would have benefited this industry as well. However, the silver standard was not adopted, and the U.S. eventually moved to the gold standard, which had significant consequences for the nation's economy.

What policy did the US government use to increase the size of the military after the United States entered World War I and why did some Americans object?

Answers

The US government implemented conscription as a policy to increase the size of the military after entering World War I.  However, some Americans objected to the policy of conscription. One of the reasons for this was that they felt it violated their individual freedom.

The conscription, also known as the Selective Service Act, was signed into law by President Woodrow Wilson in 1917. It required all men between the ages of 21 and 30 to register for the draft, and later the age range was extended to include all men between the ages of 18 and 45. The aim of conscription was to recruit a larger number of soldiers and improve the quality of the military. It was also an attempt to ensure that all social classes were represented in the military. The US government believed that conscription would ensure a fair distribution of the burden of the war.

Some people believed that they should have the right to decide whether or not they wanted to fight in the war. Others argued that the policy was unfair because it forced the poor and working-class men to fight while the rich and influential people could buy their way out of the draft. Moreover, some ethnic groups were exempted from the draft, which made the policy discriminatory. For example, African Americans and Native Americans were not drafted in large numbers.

Another factor that contributed to the objections was the anti-war sentiment among some Americans. They believed that the US should stay out of the war and focus on domestic issues. They saw the policy of conscription as a means to force them to fight in a war that they did not support. In summary, while the policy of conscription increased the size of the military during World War I, it was met with resistance from some Americans who objected to its implementation.

how do you think the second red scare and mccarthyism impacted american politics in the 1950s and beyond?

Answers

The Second Red Scare and McCarthyism had a significant impact on American politics in the 1950s and beyond. It led to a climate of fear and suspicion that resulted in the persecution and blacklisting of thousands of people who were accused of being communists or communist sympathizers.

One of the most significant impacts of McCarthyism was the erosion of civil liberties and the suppression of political dissent. The fear of being labeled a communist led to self-censorship and the curtailment of freedom of speech and association. This climate of fear also led to the formation of loyalty oaths and investigations into people's political beliefs, which had a chilling effect on the free exchange of ideas.

Moreover, McCarthyism had a lasting impact on American politics by contributing to the rise of the conservative movement in the United States. The anti-communist hysteria created by McCarthyism fueled a growing conservatism that rejected progressive policies and ideas. This led to a shift in the political landscape, as conservative politicians gained more power and influence, and progressive ideas were marginalized.

Finally, the Second Red Scare and McCarthyism also had an impact on American foreign policy, as it led to a more aggressive and interventionist stance towards communist countries. The fear of communist infiltration and the desire to contain communism led to a series of interventions and conflicts, such as the Korean War and the Vietnam War.

In conclusion, the Second Red Scare and McCarthyism had a significant impact on American politics in the 1950s and beyond, leading to the erosion of civil liberties, the rise of conservatism, and a more aggressive foreign policy. It serves as a reminder of the dangers of political extremism, fear, and intolerance, and the need to protect and defend democratic values and principles.

Slavery was the cause. The French colonizers brought a half million African captives to the island of Saint Domingue. (The French took the western part of the island from the Spanish after they wiped out most of the Taino people). The enslaved Africans worked on coffee and sugar plantations. They were often subjected to great brutality. Their forced labor made Saint Domingue the richest sugar colony in the world.

The Africans came from many nations, Nago, Fon, Allada or Arada, Yoruba, Senegal, Mandinka, Kongo, and others. They blended their spiritual traditions together . The foundation of this was Dahomey-Yoruba . It was called Vodou, drawn from Vodun, meaning “ Spirit “ in Fon. Vodou gave the enslaved Africans strength and courage to resist their enslavers. Many escaped into the mountains, living as Maroons. One of these Maroons, a Vodou priest named Makandal , plotted to launch a revolution against the French enslavers. He predicted ( he was right ) that one day the Black people would drive out the whites and rule the island. Using poison , Makandal attacked the enslavers. The colony was thrown into a panic. A scared servant girl gave up Makandal. The French colonial militia captured him and burned him. Makandal said he would return back as a mosquito to sting the enslavers even more. More slave revolts occured over the years but the colonial militia put them down. The French created a very stratified society with the rich whites ( grand blancs ) at the top, then the poor whites ( petit blancs ), the mulatres ( mixed race people) and the enslaved Blacks at the bottom. By 1789, the French Revolution broke out and the mulatres demanded equality with the whites. Two mulatre leaders , Oge and Chavannes , tried to launch a revolt on the island but the militia defeated them and they were tortured and broken on the wheel.

By 1791, the volcano was boiling among the enslaved Africans. A dynamic leader arose , a Vodou houngan named Dutty Boukman. He was a commandeur ( slave overseer ) . He was well respected . Joined by other commandeurs, Boukman and Vodou manbo ( priestess) Cecile Fatiman held a huge Vodou ceremony in the forest of Bwa Kayiman on the night of August 14,1791. A black pig was sacrificed to the Petro ( fire ) lwa and everyone present took the communion. Boukman recited the Kreoyl Prayer ,calling on the lwa to avenge the Black people and exhorting them to give up the “ white god “ and answer to the spirit of liberty. Then they swore “ Liberty or Death ! “

On August 22, 1791, the revolt broke out. The rebels, led by Boukman, burned scores of plantations and massacred the slave masters. This was called the Night of Fire. In eight days they destroyed 800 plantations and burned the fields. The smoke and flames of the burning plantations could be seen as far away as the Bahamas. The rebels eventually besieged the colonial capital of Le Cap. The rebel army grew to 80,000 and set up camps in the hills and engaged in guerrilla warfare against the French militia. Though Boukman was killed in battle, his spirit inspired the rebels to fight on. When some of the rebel leaders offered to accept amnesty for laying down arms to the colonizers and a three day rest for the rest of the rebels , the rank and file rebels swore they would never surrender even if they had to fight all the armies of Europe. The rebels fought on and by 1793 they had captured and burned the city of Le Cap.

Rising through the ranks was a Black soldier named Toussaint Breda. He came to be called L'Ouverture ( Opening the way ) for his ability to break enemy lines . He made the rebels into a well trained revolutionary army that would fight the French , then the Spanish ( after Toussaint joined the Spanish,he deserted them to join the French ). Then they fought and defeated the English. He also put down a rebellion by the mulatre General Andre Rigaud . Toussaint became Governor For Life of Saint Domingue, establishing his own government. However, the new French leader, Napoleon Bonaparte, was not willing to accept a Black man as ruler of the island. He sent a huge military expedition under his brother in law , General Charles Leclerc, to retake the island and reinstall slavery . Toussaint and his General Jean-Jacques Dessalines resorted to guerrilla warfare to fight the French army. Outnumbered, Toussaint surrendered and agreed to make peace with the French. Invited to talk peace at a banquet, Toussaint was betrayed and exiled to France by General Brunet. Dessalines rallied the people to resist and led a brilliant military campaign against the brutal French General Rochambeau.  The French was banished from the island and Dessalines declared the island to be the nation of Haiti on January 1,1804.

Thus the Haitian Revolution was completed, creating the first independent Black Nation in the Americas.

What were the most important reasons for Union victory and Confederate defeat?

Answers

The most important reasons for the Union victory and Confederate defeat during the American Civil War were:
1. Superior resources: The Union had a larger population, which allowed them to field a bigger army, and also had a more developed industrial base to supply their troops with weapons, ammunition, and other necessary materials.

2. Effective strategy:

The Union implemented the Anaconda Plan, which aimed to blockade the Confederate coast, control the Mississippi River, and divide the Confederacy into smaller, more manageable pieces. This strategy helped to weaken the Confederate economy and hinder their war efforts.
3. Strong leadership:

The Union eventually found strong military leaders, such as Ulysses S. Grant and William T. Sherman, who were able to successfully execute their strategies and defeat Confederate forces in key battles.
4. International support:

The Union was able to maintain the support of European powers like Britain and France, preventing them from recognizing and aiding the Confederacy, which limited the Confederacy's access to foreign aid and resources.
5. Internal divisions:

The Confederacy faced internal divisions and lack of unity, which weakened their overall war effort.

Some states were more committed to the cause than others, and there were disagreements about the role of central government in the Confederacy.
These factors combined to give the Union the advantage in the Civil War, ultimately leading to their victory and the Confederate defeat.

which of the following is true of the patrician order? a. only they could be landowners. b. only they could be elected to governmental offices. c. they determined who had the right of citizenship. d. only they could marry other plebeians; plebeians could not marry up. e. they were exempt from taxes.

Answers

Answer:

The correct option is b

Explanation:

only they could be elected to governmental offices.

The Patrician order was a social class of wealthy, powerful, and influential families in ancient Rome. Only Patricians could be elected to the highest governmental offices and held a monopoly on political power for much of the Roman Republic era. The Plebeians, on the other hand, were the lower class of common people, who were excluded from political power and had limited rights and privileges. Over time, the Plebeians gained more political power and representation, but the Patricians remained the dominant class in Roman society.

The other options listed are not accurate descriptions of the Patrician order. While the Patricians were typically landowners, this was not exclusive to their class (option a). The Patricians did not determine who had the right of citizenship, as citizenship was generally based on birth or other factors (option c). There were no restrictions on whom the Patricians could marry, and it was not necessary for Plebeians to marry up to become Patricians (option d). Finally, there is no evidence that Patricians were exempt from taxes (option e).

The true statement about the patrician order is that only they could be elected to governmental offices. The correct answer is Option B.

The Patricians were a privileged class of nobility in Ancient Rome. They were originally the aristocratic families of Rome that held office during the Roman Kingdom. Following the fall of the Roman Kingdom, they continued to hold an influential position in Roman politics, as well as the Roman Republic and Roman Empire.

The Patricians had a monopoly on governmental offices, such as serving as magistrates or sitting in the Roman Senate. Only the Patricians could hold these positions, and this system of government became known as the Patrician Republic. how did abraham lincoln try to get the approval of the border states with the emancipation proclamation?

Answers

Abraham Lincoln tried to get the approval of the border states with the Emancipation Proclamation by making it clear that the proclamation applied only to the Confederate states that were in rebellion, and not to the border states that remained loyal to the Union.

Lincoln knew that the border states were crucial to the Union's war effort and that any move that would alienate them could be disastrous. By exempting the border states from the Emancipation Proclamation, Lincoln hoped to avoid causing further divisions among the states and to maintain their support for the Union cause.

Additionally, Lincoln offered a plan of compensated emancipation to the border states, which would have provided financial compensation to slave owners who voluntarily freed their slaves. Although this proposal was not widely accepted, it demonstrated Lincoln's willingness to work with the border states and his efforts to keep them on the side of the Union.
