excerpt adapted from
Heart of Darkness
by Joseph Conrad

Going up that river was like traveling back to the earliest beginnings of the world when vegetation rioted on the earth and the big trees were kings. An empty stream, a great silence, a dense forest. The air was warm, thick, heavy, sluggish. There was no joy in the brilliance of sunshine. The long stretches of the waterway ran on, deserted, into the gloom of overshadowed distances. On silvery sand-banks hippos and alligators sunned themselves side by side. The broadening waters flowed through a mob of wooded islands; you lost your way on that river as you would in a desert, and butted all day long against sand banks, trying to find the channel, till you thought yourself bewitched and cut off for ever from everything you had known once—somewhere—far away—in another existence perhaps.

What is the most likely purpose of this part of the story?

A.
to describe the character’s conflict with the setting
B.
to create a subplot that introduces a minor detail
C.
to conclude the events that resulted in a turning point
D.
to introduce a new decision that will need to be made

Answers

Answer 1

Answer:

A.  to describe the character’s conflict with the setting

Explanation:

In this excerpt from Heart of Darkness, the narrator puts the accent on the surroundings, and how unpleasant it is. It gives the feeling of being lost in the prehuman era when nature and wilderness dominated, but in a negative sense. The feeling was even more intensive since the narrator traveled alone, and being alone in a, from a traveler`s point of view, hostile environment with wild animals like alligators, warm air that seems like it is unbreathable and awareness like you are in some enchanted trap where there is no way out, made the narrator feel a little bit anxious, though a man in greatness and infinity of nature is just a grain of sand, and that is even scarier.

The art of letter writing seems to have declined sharply in recent years. Perhaps the rising cost of stationery and postage is a factor. Most people today are so busy with their jobs, their families and their hobbies that they do not feel they have time to write letters. To a certain extent, television and personal computers have replaced communicating with friends as a form of entertainment. The advent of the telephone and the use of e-mail, however are probably the most significant factor in the decrease of letter writing, because they give instant access to friends and loved ones. locate the topic sentence

How would the author of “Playground” respond to the author of “I’m Not Thirteen Yet”? Use evidence from both texts in your explanation.

Answers

Answer:

The Author of “Playground” would most likely respond by saying that both of the stories are similar, by which they both have characters that bring the story to a theme. Both stories bring together that their themes may be that the main characters feel drawn to something, This is because the main character in “I’m not 13 yet” wants to be a part in a School of 12 and 13 year olds. The main character feels as if they don’t belong, because they’re being excluded from the 13 year olds’ clubs. The main character in “Playground” however, has a flashback from their anguished childhood because his son and him pass by a Playground that is very noisy.

to emphasize that reading frightening tales made the speaker feel confident and strong
to help illustrate that the speaker read a variety of imaginary tales and children’s books
to help show that books were a source of comfort and imagination for the speaker
to highlight the idea that the speaker relied on the librarian to find interesting books to read

Answers

Answer:

to help show that books were a source of comfort and imagination for the speaker.

Explanation:

'A Poem For My Librarian, Mrs Long' is a poem written by Nikki Giovanni. The poem is about Giovanni's librarian, Mrs Long. The poem is a tribute to the one who introduced Giovanni with the world inside the literature.

The poet has used allusion to C. S Lewis's book titled 'The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe' to reveal to readers that for her books were a source of comfort and imagination. The way she alludes that Mrs. Long opened the wardrobe but no lions and witches scared here, reveals the imaginative world that the poet went into by reading the books.

1. The player dashed across the field

a. subordinate clause
b. independent clause

Answers

independent Clause......

Answer:

Explanation:

An independent clause is basically a complete sentence; it can stand on its own and make sense. An independent clause consists of a subject (e.g. “the dog”) and a verb (e.g. “barked”) creating a complete thought.

The dog barked.

A dependent clause cannot stand alone even if it contains a subject and a verb. Dependent clauses do not express complete thoughts so they are considered incomplete sentences or fragments. You can often identify a dependent clause by a “dependent marker word”1— a word or phrase which implies there is more to the sentence (e.g. “when”).

When the dog barked.

The example of an independent clause above, “The dog barked,” is a simple sentence. Simple sentences can also be longer than this; as long as a sentence consists of only an independent clause, it is a simple sentence. Simple sentences can also contain a compound subject or a compound verb.  Because these sentences still contain only one independent clause (as opposed to two or more independent clauses and/or an independent clause and a dependent clause), they are still considered simple sentences.

The dog barked.

The quick, red fox jumped over the lazy, brown dog.

The dog and the fox jumped over the cat.

The fox jumped over the dog and dashed across the field.

A compound sentence consists of two or more independent clauses (or simple sentences) combined into one sentence.
