Compare and contrasts the advantages of both the north and the south during the civil war

Answers

Answer 1

Advantages of the North: larger population, a greater industrial base, a greater amount of wealth, an established government, enough farms to provide food for troops, land containing the country's iron, coal, copper, and gold, control of the seas, 21,000 miles of railroad tracks (allowing troops and supplies to be transported quickly wherever needed).

Advantages of the South: fighting defensively, familiar with the landscape, had generals who knew better how to fight and lead, had many former officers in the US Army with military experience (knew Union policies)

Weaknesses of the North: had to conquer a large area, invading unfamiliar territory, harder to supply Union troops as they got farther and farther from home, at the war's start about 1/3 of the Union's military officers resigned and returned to their homes in the South (lost many capable men), through much of the war Lincoln had to search for effective generals (had worse leadership than the Confederates)

Weaknesses of the South: few factories to produce weapons, few railroads to move troops and supplies, few supplies, smaller population (9 million), more than 1/3 of the population was enslaved (who often escaped and joined the Union, usually as informants or spies), poor navy

YOUR TASK: Write a paragraph explaining why each country attempted to settle in North America. Look for a similarity among the four. Give a short explanation of each settlement. Use a quote to prove what you think is the main reason for these settlements.

Answers

Answer:

At the start of the seventeenth century, the English had not established a permanent settlement in the Americas. Over the next century, however, they outpaced their rivals. The English encouraged emigration far more than the Spanish, French, or Dutch. They established nearly a dozen colonies, sending swarms of immigrants to populate the land. England had experienced a dramatic rise in population in the sixteenth century, and the colonies appeared a welcoming place for those who faced overcrowding and grinding poverty at home. Thousands of English migrants arrived in the Chesapeake Bay colonies of Virginia and Maryland to work in the tobacco fields. Another stream, this one of pious Puritan families, sought to live as they believed scripture demanded and established the Plymouth, Massachusetts Bay, New Haven, Connecticut, and Rhode Island colonies of New England.

The German–Ottoman alliance

Explanation:

The German–Ottoman alliance was ratified by the German and Ottoman Empires on August 2, 1914, shortly following the outbreak of World War I. It was created as part of a joint effort to strengthen and modernize the weak Ottoman military and to provide Germany with safe passage into the neighboring British colonies. On the eve of the First World War, the Ottoman Empire was in ruinous shape. It had lost substantial territory in disastrous wars, its economy was in shambles and its subjects were demoralized. The Empire needed time to recover and to carry out reforms, but the world was sliding into war and it would need to take a position. After the Italo-Turkish War and Balkan Wars, the Empire's resources were completely drained. Since remaining neutral and focusing on recovery became impossible due to outbreak of the First World War, the Empire had to ally with one camp or the other. It did not have adequate quantities of weaponry and machinery, and lacked the financial means to purchase new ones. The only option for the Sublime Porte was to establish an alliance with a European power; it did seem to not really matter which one. As Talat Pasha, the Minister of Interior, wrote in his memoirs: “Turkey needed to join one of the country groups so that it could organize its domestic administration, strengthen and maintain its commerce and industry, expand its railroads, in short, to survive and to preserve its existence.”
