Can someone help paraphrase this paragraph?

(3) What attachment can a poor European emigrant have for a country where he had nothing? The knowledge of the language, the love of a few kindred as poor as himself, were the only cords that tied him: his country is now that which gives him land, bread, protection, and consequence: Ubi panis ibi patrias, is the motto of all emigrants. What then is the American, this new man? He is either an European, or the descendant of an European, hence that strange mixture of blood, which you will find in no other country. I could point out to you a family whose grandfather was an Englishman, whose wife was Dutch, whose son married a French woman, and whose present four sons have now four wives of different nations. He is an American, who leaving behind him all his ancient prejudices and manners, receives new ones from the new mode of life he has embraced, the new government he obeys, and the new rank he holds. He becomes an American by being received in the broad lap of our great Alma Mater. Here individuals of all...nations are melted into a new race of men, whose labors and posterity will one day cause great changes in the world. Americans are the western pilgrims, who are carrying along with them that great mass of arts, sciences, vigor, and industry which began long since in the east; they will finish the great circle. The Americans were once scattered all over Europe; here they are incorporated into one of the finest systems of population which has ever appeared, and which will hereafter become distinct by the power of the different climates they inhabit.

What are some details that you know about the 1960's that could have inspired the creation of a song about isolation? By ""I Am A Rock""

Answers

"I Am A Rock" is a song that was written and performed by Paul Simon in 1965.

The song is believed to have been inspired by the social and political climate of the 1960s, which was characterized by a sense of isolation and alienation among many people.

During this time, there were several social and political movements that were causing a lot of division and tension within society. The civil rights movement, the anti-war movement, and the counterculture movement were all examples of this.

In addition, many people were feeling disconnected from their families and communities due to the rise of urbanization and the breakdown of traditional social structures.

This sense of isolation and loneliness was further exacerbated by the widespread use of drugs and the prevalence of mental health issues such as depression and anxiety.

All of these factors may have contributed to the creation of "I Am A Rock," which explores the themes of isolation and detachment.

The lyrics of the song speak to the idea of withdrawing from society and cutting oneself off from the world in order to avoid the pain and disappointment that comes with human relationships.

Overall, "I Am A Rock" is a reflection of the cultural and social changes that were taking place during the 1960s and the impact that these changes had on individuals' sense of identity and belonging.

Camels Join the Army!
by Carol D. Greathouse

1 On a stormy day in April 1856, a ship carrying Egyptian cargo sailed along the Gulf Coast of Texas. The ship pitched sharply in the high seas. Days passed before the captain was able to transfer his freight to a small boat that could take it to shore. After three months at sea, 34 camels were about to set foot on U.S. soil!

2 The camels were bound for the newly formed U.S. Camel Corps that belonged to the U.S. War Department. The head of the corps was Secretary of War Jefferson Davis. Davis hoped that the camels could be used to explore the deserts of west Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California. He believed the camels could carry supplies to remote army outposts and even carry soldiers to watch over pioneer settlements.

3 But once on land, the camels had to travel to their permanent home at Camp Verde, Texas.

Biting, Kicking, Spitting, and Smelling
4 The journey was not easy and many problems occurred. Army men were familiar with horses and mules but not camels.
5 Packing supplies around the hump in the middle of a camel’s saddle frustrated the men. Some of them were convinced that the camels held grudges and waited to get even by biting, kicking, or spitting at them. Above all else, the camels smelled. Their odor was so strong that one whiff of the approaching camels sent horses stampeding. The army ended up sending a horseback rider ahead of the camels, yelling, “Get out of the road; the camels are coming.”

Camels on the Go

6 But when the camels were called to carry supplies for a War Department expedition, the animals proved their worth. Edward Fitzgerald Beale, the expedition leader, praised them. “My admiration for the camels increases daily with my experience of them. They pack water for others four days under a hot sun and never get a drop; they pack heavy burdens of corn and oats for months and never get a grain; and on bitter greasewood and other worthless shrubs not only subsist but keep fat.”

On Active Duty

7 Five years after the camels arrived in the United States, the Civil War divided the country. The Southern states decided to secede—or break away—from the Northern states and form the Confederate States of America. As Texas politicians argued whether their state should also secede, General Twiggs saw a way to finally rid his command of the camels. He suggested that he could save the U.S. government more than $500 each month by ending the Camel Corps. He asked permission to sell the camels or let them loose on the prairie. But before he received an answer, Texas did secede. Camp Verde surrendered to Confederate soldiers, who now found themselves in charge of weapons, supplies, and a total of 80 camels.

8 For the next four years, Confederate soldiers used some of the camels to haul cotton to Mexico and salt throughout Texas. They loaned other camels to the postal service to deliver mail around San Antonio, Texas. But for the most part, the camels had little to do.

9 The soldiers at Camp Verde paid little attention to them. Some camels wandered off; three traveled to the war-torn countryside of Arkansas. One Confederate general used a camel to carry his company’s baggage. Soldiers reported seeing this camel “swinging along, under a little mountain of carpet-sacks, cooking utensils, blankets, etc.”

10 When the Civil War ended in 1865, the camels at Camp Verde became the property of the U.S. government. A year later, the 66 remaining camels were auctioned off. Edward Beale, who had been so taken with the camels, bought some of them. Beale’s camels retired to his California ranch, where they lived in comfort. Others were bought and used to carry supplies over land. When these camels were no longer needed, the owners turned the camels loose. Over the years, settlers and miners claimed to see wild camels roaming the American Southwest.

Answers

Camels Join the Army! by Carol D. Greathouse is the narrative of how camels were first introduced to the country during the American Civil War for use in the army and why they were never used again. In the Southwest during the middle of the 19th century, the American Army tried using camels as pack animals in an experiment known as the United States Camel Corps.

Is it true that camels were employed in combat?

Camels have been used in battle for thousands of years, just like horses. They could carry enormous loads and function without water for days, making them the ideal choice for patrol and transport missions during the First World War's desert campaigns. Despite the camels' success in the field and their suitability for travel, the Army decided against adopting them for use in battle.

An essential chapter in the history of the American military is the Camel Corp. The cost of bringing camels to the US was not worth the effort required to train them. Camel use in the military would still be prevalent today if not for the Civil War.

"I'd like to know who he is and what he does ," insisted Tom. "I can tell you right now. He owned some drug stores, a lot of drug stores. He built them up himself. "said Daisy. " - pg. 115 chapter 6

Answers

Throughout the novel, there have been numerous rumors circulating about Gatsby. Some of the rumors include that he is a bootlegger, that he is a German spy, and that he killed a man.

However, I personally believe that Gatsby made his wealth through illegal means, specifically bootlegging. This belief is supported by the fact that Gatsby throws lavish parties with an endless supply of alcohol, which would have been difficult to obtain during Prohibition.

The quote, "I'd like to know who he is and what he does," insisted Tom. "I can tell you right now. He owned some drug stores, a lot of drug stores.

He built them up himself," said Daisy, contradicts my stance. This is because Daisy claims that Gatsby made his fortune through owning drug stores, which is a legal and legitimate means of earning money.

However, it is important to note that Daisy may not actually know the truth about Gatsby's wealth, as she herself admits to being careless with the truth earlier in the novel.

Therefore, while this quote may contradict my belief that Gatsby made his wealth through bootlegging, it is not necessarily a reliable source of information.

The correct answers are options B and C, since Rainsford does kill animals and sees no problem in that, but he refuses to kill humans with Zaroff.

Rainsford believes killing humans is murder but has no problem killing animals.Rainsford believes Zaroff is a murderer because he hunts humans.

What is the passage about?

The passage was taken from the short story "The Most Dangerous Game," in which Zaroff invites Rainsford to hunt with him. The only problem is that Zaroff does not hunt animals anymore, but he kills humans instead.

From Rainsford's statement "I am a hunter, not a murderer," it can be inferred that he believes there is a difference between hunting animals for sport and killing humans for sport. He sees himself as a hunter, someone who respects the rules of the game and the rights of the prey, rather than a murderer, who kills without justification. This suggests that Rainsford thinks killing for sport is murder when it involves humans, but he has no problem with hunting animals for food or other practical reasons.

With that in mind, options B and C are correct.

Note: Option A could also be correct if it referred to killing humans. We did not include it in the answers because it is unclear as to whether it refers to humans or to animals.

The protagonist seeks revenge for the death of his father is Shakespeare's hamlet similar to the ancient epic poems. option b is the correct option.

Yes, The protagonist in Shakespeare's Hamlet is similar to those in ancient epic poems in the sense that he is seeking revenge for the death of a loved one. However, the characters and plot of Hamlet are unique compared to those of ancient epics. In Hamlet, the protagonist is a prince seeking revenge for the murder of his father by his uncle, while in Ancient Greek epics, the protagonist is often a hero seeking revenge against an enemy, such as in Homer's Iliad and Odyssey.

Unlike many of the ancient epics, Hamlet is a tragedy, with a central character facing an inner conflict of moral responsibility, while in Ancient Greek epics, the central character is often a warrior acting on his own volition. Additionally, Hamlet is structured as a play, while ancient epics were usually written in a poetic form. Poem using the symbols of darkness and sunshine:

Darkness, my constant foe,

Seems to lurk in every corner,

Blocking out the light,

Making it hard to navigate.

But then, a glimmer of hope,

A ray of sunshine, so bold,

Breaks through the darkness,

Lighting up the world.

Overcoming obstacles,

Finding the strength to rise,

With each step forward,

The darkness starts to retreat.

And when the sun sets,

And darkness returns,

I know I can face it,

With the lessons I've learned.

Gatsby

Based on the four items in Question #1, which three belong together (and WHY), and which

does not belong (and WHY)? *

Answers

The three things that go together are "God sees everything," "Autumn," and "George Wilson Gatsby," as they are all mentioned in the same sentence by the author.

George Wilson is the item that does not belong because it is missing from the quote.  "The best laid schemes of Mice and Men/ Gang after agley," the quotation continues. This passage comes from one of Robert Burns' poems.

God is omniscient, hence it is obvious that He is aware of everything. He is ever-present, and He is aware of all that occurs in the world. Since He is a gracious and loving God, He longs for us to turn to Him and put our faith in Him in order to establish a relationship with Him.
