Why does Squealer use the term "readjustment" instead of "reduction"? "For the time being, certainly, it had been found necessary to make a readjustment of rations (Squealer always spoke of it as a "readjustment," never as a "reduction") but in comparison with the days of Jones, the improvement was enormous."

Answers

Answer:

Squealer has a kinder personality, and likes to keep morale as high as possible. Therefore, using readjustment, which has a more positive connotation than reduction, prevents the lack of rations from dampening the mood so intensely.

Read the excerpt from a short story. The beach teemed with tourists from boardwalk to shore. A canopy of colorful umbrellas covered the sand. Each was preoccupied with his own happy task, and none noticed the figure as it emerged from the surf. Its skin was blistered and raw, and it lumbered awkwardly in the foam. Its hideous eyes hungrily appraised the masses. How does the excerpt exemplify the ideas king describes in danse macabre?.

Answers

Answer:

It provides a "single powerful spectacle" for the imagination's eye.

Explanation:

King describes it almost as if a camera is floating around showing each thing that seems natural until he shows what is not. It is a way to create a good imagery for the reader and make it a spectacle with a shocking twist on a paragraph that starts with tourists at the shore and ends with hideous eyes.

Can You Really Build a House With Straw?

Yes, with dry, tightly baled straw you can build a durable, beautiful home. The Three Little Pigs1 had it all wrong! Homes, schools, parks, and even businesses have used straw bales to build sustainable, durable and attractive structures.

Sustainable building, also called green building, is “the practice of creating and using healthier and more resource-efficient models of construction, renovation, operation, maintenance, and demolition.” (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.)

Some home builders achieve this using materials that seem out of the ordinary. Straw bales are one of these alternative materials.
Building with straw is not new, but its use has been increasing. The buildings can be plain, fancy, large or small. They are easy to customize and lend themselves to artistic flourishes. Straw bale homes have withstood harsh climates and weathered well in cold, snowy winters and hot, humid summers. There are many straw bale homes around the world, some of which are over a hundred years old.

5 Advantages of a straw bale home over a conventionally built one include:
• They use a fast growing and renewable agricultural by-product2 that is otherwise wasted.
• They contain fewer toxins than conventional materials.
• They have a high insulation factor that lowers the cost of heating and cooling.
• The homes can be easily customized to the owner’s needs, both practical and creative.
• The cost per square foot is reasonable, and depending on the building methods chosen, can be very economical.

There are two ways to build a straw bale structure: load bearing and non-load bearing. A load bearing house uses the straw bales to provide the structural support for the building. Load bearing structures are most appropriate in mild climates. A non-load bearing house uses lumber or some other material for its primary support. The bales then shape the walls and provide the insulation. Places that get lots of snow need that extra support.

In construction, the bales are first stacked on a foundation. They are piled on top of each other to form the walls. Next, a moisture barrier is applied. The final layer is of plaster made with a base of clay, lime, or cement. Paint may be applied, but is not necessary. What is necessary is to keep the plaster in good condition and to regularly inspect for cracks. If the straw becomes damp, the house can be ruined by mildew.

Straw bale houses are often built in a workshop setting. Everyone is guided by an expert who has been hired to supervise the project. The owner gets plenty of help to build the home, and the other participants learn how to build with straw. They also get plenty dirty while stacking the bales, making the plaster and smearing it on!

Who would have imagined that people could build earth-friendly homes from straw? There are many other alternative materials being used to build interesting and sustainable shelters: rammed earth, cob,3 papercrete,4 cordwood,5 recycled glass bottles, structural insulated panels (SIPs,) tunnels (for partially underground “earthships”), car tires, and even plants (for green roofs and living walls.) It is exciting to imagine what new techniques are in store for the future.

If only that Little Pig had known enough to bale his straw properly, he would still be snug inside. The Big Bad Wolf would never have been able to blow his sturdy little house down.

1The Three Little Pigs: a popular children’s story featuring three pigs who build three different types of houses, including one of straw which is easily destroyed by the Big Bad Wolf
2by-product: a substance or product left over after something is harvested or made (wheat straw is a by-product of wheat)
3cob: a mixture of clay and chopped straw
4papercrete: re-pulped/re-ground paper fiber mixed with cement, clay or soil
5cordwood: short pieces of wood

Which quote from the text provides support for the claim made in the first paragraph?

A. “They use a fast growing and renewable agriculture by-product that is otherwise wasted.”
B. “They have a high insulation factor that lowers the cost of heating and cooling.”
C. “Straw bale homes have withstood harsh climates and weathered well in cold, snowy winters and hot, humid summers.”
D. “If only that Little Pig had known enough to bale his straw properly, he would still be snug inside.”

The 55 Fiction contest was created in 1987 by New Times, an alternative weekly in California. It quickly caught on, and created a new genre: "flash fiction." New Times (and its sister publication, the Santa Maria Sun) now receive a thousand or more entries annually, from around the world. Winners have been collected in two highly praised books. You can learn more about the contest at Wikepedia.

In 2007 I entered for the first time, and they picked three of my entries. (Another writer had five entries published. Between us, we were more than a third of the winners!)

The judges wrote: "If you've only got space for 23 entries, maybe it isn't fair to allow a couple of authors to get multiple works published. Who cares? These were some of the best we got."

In 2008 I entered again, and another of my stories was chosen.

The first four stories below are my 55 Fiction winning entries. Others follow.

What Thomas Kinkade is known for?

No other craftsman has caught light in its many structures, tones, and examples like the matchless Thomas Kinkade. In view of his ability, he is perceived as America's most gathered craftsman.

One of the exceptional characteristics of Kinkade's work is that he conceals messages to his significant other and little girls in each composition.

For instance, for his better half Nanette, he paints a secret letter "N" in each piece. His four little girls' names, as well as their countenances, likewise show up in his works.

Certain individuals say that Kinkade is a passing frenzy of the twenty-first 100 years; nonetheless, obviously he has fortitude in the workmanship world. His works alleviate the faculties and motivate the psyche since he catches the embodiment of light, the power on which human existence flourishes.

Interactions of Characters Shape the Theme in The Judgment of Midas

In “The Judgment of Midas”, based on Greek Mythology, Midas became friends with Dionysus, the god of wine, who offered him a gift. Midas was greedy and chose the golden touch where everything he touched turned to gold. He realized it was a terrible curse and begged the wine god to take it back. Later in his life, Midas was judged and music contest between the nature god, Pan, with his reed pipes, and Apollo, the music god, playing his golden lyre. Apollo was the winning choice for everyone except Midas. Due to his bitter experiences with gold, he could no longer see the music from Apollo’s Golden Lyre as beautiful and Apollo punished him by giving him donkey ears. So Apollo wants everyone to know that Midas had the musical taste of, and was stubborn as a donkey. The theme of “The Judgment of Midas” is don’t be greedy or unjust because there will be consequences and the interactions between the characters in the passage shape this theme.

The theme of “The Judgment of Midas” is shown through the interactions between Midas and Dionysus. Midas “had chanced to befriend Dionysus…; and when he was asked to choose some good gift in return, he prayed that everything he touched might be turned to gold”(2). He came to hate gold and begged “the gift that was a curse” to be taken away(2). Midas’s greediness causes him to be punished with a curse. Dionysus knew that too much of a good thing can be bad but let Midas be the judge of that so Midas could figure it out the hard way. Their interaction contributes to the theme of the passage to not be greedy and judge wrongly.

The interaction between Apollo and Midas in which Midas “refused to acknowledge Apollo lord of music” shapes the theme to not be greedy or judge unjustly because consequences follow(6). For Midas, “the looks of the god dazzled his eyes unpleasantly and put him in mind of his foolish wish years before. For him there was no music in a golden lyre!”(6). Midas was wrong and unfair when he contradicted Apollo was the winner of the contest and choose Pan instead. So Apollo did “not leave such dull ears unpunished. At a word from him they grew long, pointed, furry, and able to turn this way and that (like a poplar leaf)—a plain warning to musicians. Midas had the ears of a donkey, for everyone to see!”(7). Apollo punished Midas for judging unfairly. The theme of “The judgment of Midas” is that there are consequences for bad actions like being greedy or judgmental and the interactions between characters develop that theme.

In “The Judgment of Midas”, the theme is there is punishment for bad actions such as greed or unfair judgment. The interactions between the character of Midas with Dionysus and Apollo shape that theme throughout the passage. Dionysus gives Midas a reward but he is greedy for gold and gets cursed instead. Then he is unfair to Apollo in a music contest because of his bad memories of gold so Apollo punishes what he believes is bad taste in music by giving him Donkey ears. The character Midas gets punished multiple times because of the bad things he does. The interactions between characters in “The Judgment of Midas” shape the theme of the passage.

The FBI came and told Jimmy's father that he couldn't stay because he was Japanese. Later, Japan and America had a war, and all the Japanese people were forced to leave. They were forced to live in small guarded homes at a camp, including Jimmy, Taro, and the mother. When Jimmy was there, he lost his appetite. Jimmy seemed to become sick.
