In this excerpt from the Reverend Jesse Jackson’s speech to the Democratic National Convention in 1988, Jackson develops an interesting “extended” metaphor. Although Jackson and Taylor are comparing different things, what are 2 similarities both the excerpt and the poem share?
“America’s not a blanket, woven from one thread, one color, one cloth. When I was a child growing up in Greenville, South Carolina, and Grandmother could not afford a blanket, she didn’t complain, and we did not freeze. Instead she took pieces of old cloth–patches, wool, silk, gabardine, crockersack on the patches–barely good enough to wipe off your shoes with. But they didn’t stay that way very long. With sturdy hands and a strong cord, she sewed them together into a quilt, a thing of beauty and power and culture. Now…we must build such a quilt.” Jesse Jackson
Although Jackson and Taylor are comparing different things, the 2 similarities both the excerpt and the poem share are:
They compare America to a blanket in an offhand mannerThey talk about how patience is key to turning around a difficult situation. This is because, the country, America is compared to a blanket, even though it is offhand as it is said that a quilt should be built that should be strong and contain a symbol of beauty, power and culture,
What is an Extended Metaphor? This refers to the type of metaphor that is used in an extended manner, over the course of multiple lines.

"My most memorable weekend"
It is the most memorable weekend yet. We had decided three weeks earlier to visit the most exclusive park in Winnipeg. I couldn't wait because, it was said to be rife with rich greenery and and very diverse ecosystem.
One of it's features is mile long bridge over a river that was full of hippos and crocodiles.
We arrived at about 7am, parked just at the entrance, carried our backpacks and hiked inwards into the reserve.
James has always been known for his very eccentric nature. We had all gotten onto the bridge and it was remaining just the two of us. With about a few steps to go, James started jumping up and down the rope bridge.
Terrified, I started screaming, asking him to stop. By the third jump, the ropes snapped and I dropped 10 feet into the river.
Luckily the current wasn't very strong. However, the next thing that happened sent my spirit away from my body. As soon as I hit the water, less that 15 seconds later, a large hippo with jaws a huge as the buckets of a construction excavator made a grab at me.
I was dead. I didn't feel any pain so I thought I was definitely dead. Moments later, I realized that I got my backpack which was quite heavy and full. Then it headed towards land away from competition.
When I woke up, (for I had fainted from fright) I learnt that the park guide had seeing what happened dashed very quickly and proactively towards the part where the hippo was headed. The hippo seeing the guides guns and hearing gun shots dropped me and decided to have another kind of breakfast, at it dived back into the river.

c
Third-person limited
d
Third-person omniscient
This excerpt employs the viewpoint of Third-person limited as, 'the story is told in the third person because the narrator is aware of Goodman's thoughts.'
What is a Third-person limited viewpoint?
Third-person limited narratives are much more prevalent in contemporary fiction than omniscient narrators. They introduce distinctive characteristics to one‘s narratives that have made this point of view perennially popular within and between both writers and readers alike.
The third-person limited makes it possible to focus on the internal dynamics of one character at a moment, letting you fully develop the character. This can happen not only by what they say but also by how you classify everything that happens to them.
The incorporation of the third person limited allows the audience to make the same mistake that Elizabeth Bennett does with Mr. Darcy. Therefore, the correct answer is option C.
